I have an 8yr old son who has been playing rec ball for 2 years (spring and fall ball). I also have him working with a trainer now. We live in Covington, GA and are interested in getting him into travel ball (preferably in the area if possible - but open to other areas). His skills have developed quite well over these 2 years and I think he would be even better playing with more skilled players on a travel team. Can anyone provide me with some info to help us get started/ find a team near us? Please help! Thanks!

1. I would say 80% or more of kids start travel around 9u. So you are very much in line with the rest of us.

2. You don't live in a great area for baseball. While I don't typically tell people to travel more than 30 minutes for baseball, you may have to. You may want to check in with Home Plate Chili Dogs. They are out of Peachtree City.

3. This could be debated endlessly, but I am not a fan of trainers below 12u. Until your son gets hormones going through him he isn't going to be able to get much stronger. If you have a qualified coach he can give your son the hitting, catching, pitching instruction he needs.

4. You are correct, if he plays with better he will get better.

Yes, look under tryouts and the age group. You may want to consider Allstars which will give you an idea of travel ball.

Just consider that travel ball is expensive and a huge commitment. Also think of theiir arms when playing a minimum of 3 games every weekend. Son started at 10 because I waited as long as possible. When he wanted to quit because he was getting bored and really frustrated, we looked for a laid back travel team. Saved money and time. It also allows him to be a kid. He is 13u and not behind . I know kids who started travel at 11 that are good ball players.

Good luck!

It's actually quite simple -- look further down in this forum. You'll see all the different age groups looking for players. The 2017 season is currently going on for your son's age group. Starting as early as June, you'll start seeing coaches posting for next year's teams. Contact coaches (or go to their posted tryouts) for any teams that you are interested in.

Good luck and have fun. It's a wild ride!!
