After playing travel ball year round for 5 years, I allowed my son "time off"...he didn't ask for time off, but didn't complain either. He is 14, and plays for a great organization. But after playing 2 fall sports (baseball being one) he was bruised, battered, exhausted, with a demanding academic schedule as well, and I thought, time for a break. Yes, all the competition is working hard all winter, getting ahead, getting stronger, but I felt like he needed a break. We are back at it soon. Where we play this won't affect him, but he will be "rusty" and need a few weeks to get back in shape. He literally has not picked up a ball, thrown a ball, swung a bat for 3 months but he's slept more than I ever imagined he could. He can't wait to get on the field now. Thoughts from parents of older players...is this ok? So much pressure...no rest, physically or psychologically. At 14 I know it's ok, but what about 15? Does it really need to be a 2nd job (school being the 1st one) to move on? (Meaning only taking a 2-3 month break, not just from throwing but from EVERYTHING other than sports for fun)?

When my son was younger he was shut down from October-January. When he got to high school it was more like October-mid december. There are many schools of thought on this, I am in the camp that says there are micro tears that need time to heal. No overhead throwing for at least 2 months is beneficial. I also didn't let my kid lift weights until he was shaving once a week.

Maybe it's a coincidence but my 11th grade kid hasn't needed knee surgery, didn't fracture his back, or hip, or arm, or need TJ surgery, or get little league elbow like sooooo many of his peers. They only get one body, they need to listen to pain and they need breaks.

My .02

I have a son the same age and you taking the time is GOOD thing. There is NO sense in pushing to injury or burnout, especially at this age when they are growing like weeds. I've already told my son, if academics start to suffer, ball gets pulled back. Enjoy the other sport and some time off. Most teams started indoor & conditioning last 4-6 weeks so just coming back now he isn't really "behind" per se. Just start doing indoors and some strength/conditioning. Timing may be the biggest thing to get down, but its not like anyone is facing much, if any, live pitching during this time.

There are tryouts going on now, but there will be plenty of openings too come April when JV is done. Always places and options open. Pickup is a good way to tryout the team as well, see if its a fit for you before committing.

Up until this year because my son is going into high school, we have always taken time off. My son appreciates the time off so he can take break from the burnout. He knows once the season starts he has to put work in.
