I need to ask a question that I think has been asked and answered before but I can't remember. Playing BPA this past weekend. Throw was made from outfield to home. The catcher catches the ball turns to tag the runner who procedes to dive over the catcher and tags home plate. Now, I think it is cool and amazing when they do this, but isn't it in the rule book that a player must SLIDE into homeplate? BPA director didn't know the rule and the umpS didn't either. What's the call?

MTN,

The rule is there is minimize contact between the catcher and runner therefore if there is contact and the runner did not slide he would be called out...But since there was no contact the runner should be safe...The ownness is on the runner not to make contact or to reduce it by sliding.

Per Bpa rule book....

In all divisions a runner is out when he does not attempt to get around a fielder who has the ball and is waiting to make the tag, or if they maliciously run into a fielder. Runner(s) are never required to slide, but if a runner elects to slide, the slide must be legal. Leaping, jumping and hurdling are all legal attempts to avoid a fielder as long as the fielder is lying on the ground. Diving over a fielder is illegal.
PENALTY: If there is a collision, a dead ball will be called, the runner called out, and any other runners return to the last base touched. The player who caused the collision shall be ejected from that game.

Thanks C. Morton. To bad the umps and tourney director didn't have a clue. The director told me he didn't know and would have to find out. Our game was over the next time I saw him and he said he was working on it. Right. Thanks again.

You would think with all the smart phones someone would have looked it up or the director would have a rule book handy in his back pocket or something.

I found out a little while ago from our coach the umpire told him he did not know the rule so he couldn't make that call. Really? I told him what the rule was and he told me one more word and I was gonna half to go. I didn't want to stay quiet but I did. The umpires NEED to know the rule book and NOT use their BEST INTERPRETATIONS of the rules. I don't have anything against the umpires, but if you are gonna get paid to do a job, then you better know how to do it or ask for help. OK, I'm done. LOL.
