My son plays on a solid team that has been playing travel ball for three years. The team is currently coached by some dads, but we would like to bring in a paid coach for the 13U season. The core group of players is really talented, and we want to provide them with coaching to match that talent. Does anybody have any tips for this process?
1. What price range should we expect to pay a paid coach per season? 2. How often do the paid coaches attend practice? Once per week? 3. Are excess coaches out there on the market? How difficult is the search going to be? 4. We have easy access to size appropriate fields. What other things are important to coaches that will help us "sell" our team to get the best possible coach?
Thank you. |

There is a paid coach....he RUNS every practice and every game, he gets paid 5-10K per season, and by he runs the game I mean he can sit the assistant coaches kids, because it's HIS team.
There are paid consultants....he comes to scheduled practices and works with some kids on pitching/catching/crow-hops...etc...he does not run the game on the field.
Do you know what you are REALLY looking for? |

My definition of "paid coaching" means just that... a head coach and an assistant coach who are paid to do the job...prices listed above are accurate..both get paid. No parental involvement whatsoever except someone to do game changer. Coaches run the practices and manage the game, and who plays when, where. There should be financial accountability however. Parents sit in the stands and stay away from the dugout, and the coaches, except for questions relating to their player only away from the field.
Important note: just because someone has played college, or milb or even pro ball does not mean they are a good COACH as far as managing the team, or transferring their knowledge to young players. There are amazing guys out there and not so much. Rather than selling your team to the coach I would be more interested in the coaches selling themselves to you. Have him/them come to a practice and see how they interact with the boys. |
