Anyone have experience with travel ball and football? Our team will split after Spring '21 (he turns 12 July 30th), and I am trying to get a jump on what to do. Only problem, my son also plays football and wrestles. He has been rejected from several programs in the past because they don't deal with football players, but most won't admit that publicly. Any clues? We live in Dallas.

He always does. The question is, are there any actual programs out there that will work with a Spring/Summer only baseball player? As I mentioned, he has already been shot down by several programs that seem to only want year round baseball players.

I really think that problem fixes itself for the better players as they get older. By 14U the academy teams are looking to bring in the top athletes regardless if they play other sports. Having the top athletes will put more eyes on the rest of the team which means more prestige (and money) for the academy. I think the younger teams that demand a player play both Fall and Spring just want to make sure they get both checks from the parents.

Just went through this time period and my kid is a rising freshman playing football and baseball, so I have a strong opinion on this. There is a lot of BS thrown about how Johnny will fall behind by playing other sports, and he will for a short window- but genetics will play a bigger role on weeding kids out post puberty than 50 fall balls.

Consider the motivation ($$$) of the people "shooting you down" and realize they likely did you a favor. Clearly, if your kids best interest was at heart they would tell an 11 year old to enjoy football, play basketball or wrestle, and see you in the spring.

My kid played 3-4 sports every year until now. He started football in seventh grade and prob would have begun in 6th had we not felt this same pressure you are feeling now. He played middle school football and fall baseball in 7th and 8th with football being primary- missing many baseball practices and some games.

Fall ball competition at this age is not very good, and the better teams are not at full strength precisely because many (to most) of the best athletes play football.

Furthermore, football cannot be duplicated for the development of your son's athleticism and overall mental toughness. Find the kids playing football and watch how they play baseball- there is a big difference

Realize, however, there will be some costs. My kid is not on the premier team in our area because of the fall ball issue- he isn't a middle infielder. Parents of kids he played with are talking commitment, showcases, basically showing off. All that can wait. In the end he object is to build a better kid. If the next level is possible, he should be the best player at 17 or 21- sacrificing a sport you love to peak at 11-15 is a poor choice based on a faulty premise.
