As the 13U season begins winding down, I guess it's that time to bid adieu to those 2023's who've been playing among those an entire grade level below them. Time to see if all the preparation all these years has them ready to compete with those older than them... A grade or grades above them.

As the sun will dawn on a new season in couple of months, those going into high school will have a completely different focus. Gone are the travel seasons that begin in March and end in June. High school ball will change that. Sure, they'll be playing in Feb-April (Fresh/JV), but many will be called up to V, and extend h/s ball into May. Which, appropriately enough, is about when 15U ball gets fired up (late-May). Who's going to realistically continue to play down, paying $2K-$3K for travel, when they may not be able to participate in 1/2 or more of the season (if highschool coach forbids travel play during school season).

At no point is this post to be negative... Adversely, it's to wish the best of luck to those I now call dear friends I've come to know over the past 3-5 travel ball seasons. Good luck with h/s fall workouts, and tryouts next Jan.. And I'm sure we'll see one another around the park, just remember us 'little guys' playing beneath you all on the lowly 14's.

@KentMurphy Lol... My friend called me and told me to read your post. My son is a 2024 kid and plays for one of the Astros teams, so I pay close attention to the 14u Astros team above us. I looked at their roster and if not mistaken it consisted of mostly 2023 kids and a few 2022's. Even though I would miss many of my friends and my son's teammates that are 2023 student-athletes, I think it would be a gigantic mistake to play against 8th graders after playing against high schoolers from Feb.-May. Honestly, I've enjoyed it since we were 7 because it's as if we were playing up. So I love it as a dad who is preparing my son for his future, but I'm not sure it helps them (not saying it hurts, just doesn't prepare).

Some will just re-classify (hold back) to be 2025 grads anyway. I know a few that have already did it. Travel ball favors those who mature early or those who are the oldest in their class.

My son will be going into 13U this year so we are not there yet, but I am interested in this topic for the future. Do most players skip 14U if they play for their high school team? Do most local coaches accept that and allow 14 year olds to join their 15U teams? Thank you for any information.

Is it a GHSA rule that prohibits travel baseball while the HS Season is going, or the individual coaches or both?

Also does it apply to 9th grade, JV, Varsity or all? It really doesn't apply to my son he is 2024 going into 8th grade and going into 14U in the fall. Just curious to see which of the 2023's are still hanging around 14U vs going to 15U.

I'm sure we will still see a lot of those 2023's in fall ball if they don't play football.
