My son will turn 14 in the middle of the Fall season this year. I'm not sure if he should try out for a 14U team, or if he should continue with 13U in the Fall and try out for 14U in the Spring. Any thoughts on this are appreciated.

This post has gotten quite a few views, but no responses. I'd love to hear from parents as well as coaches or managers.

You're leaving a lot of details out, if you're hoping for any kind of meaningful response.

What grad year?

Playing 13U now? 54/80 or 60/90?

Most kids play for the same team in the Fall and then Spring season; are you trying to avoid that for any reason?

Is he any good?

Is his current team any good?

Is he any good? Yes, for a AA or maybe AAA level. Is his current team any good? Yes, they're pretty good, but that's not really my consideration. I'm not trying to avoid playing for the same team Fall and Spring. Much of his 13U team is aging out now, but he won't turn 14 until late October.

All I'm really asking is for opinions on whether he would be better off trying out for and playing on a 14U team this Fall, or (since he will still be eligible) if he should play 13U again in the Fall and then try out for a 14U team in the Spring. His age puts in him an in-between spot. I'm sure I'm not the first or only dad in this situation, so I'm seeking opinions.

May 1 is the cutoff for his birthdate. If he can play 13U in fall. He can play it in the spring. Hope that helps.

To tackle an answer, it is all about what you are looking for. In my opinion, if he can play at 60/90 then stay there and do not regress to 54/80 regardless of the level of the team. Look for a program that develops players at all levels, pushes their teams to play a competitive schedule that does not glorify a win loss record.

If you are playing travel baseball, your son is a 14u baseball player if he turns 14 before May 1, 2022. He should play 14u Fall/Spring. Most 14 kids will be 13u this spring. The only exception is if he is in the 7th grade this year. If that is the case he is eligible for 13u due to being a grade behind. However, PG has a new rule limiting the number of "reclass" (grade eligible kids) allowed on a team at 13u and below.
