Here is a link to the newly published ASMI position statement on TJ surgeries. It includes recommendations for youth pitchers. Worth the read.

Great replies to this topic..the object of youth sports should be to get your son ready for HS and hopefully college ball in any sport...Travel Baseball has gone the way of coaches worried about winning tournaments instead of developing players. I guess the more games they win is the more people they can get to come pay them too much money to have their son play with their team-organization. Too many of these programs are trying to turn a profit versus developing boys to be good players.

On top of over pitching young arms, they also are now trying to go to 7 year old kid pitch, with 7 year olds throwing 50-60 plus pitches in a game. There will be a lot more dead arms out there now due to these overzealous coaches.

And parents realize that MOST of these young studs wont be the studs come HS age for various different reasons.

Wait, is 100+ per weekend too much for 9U?

Hshuler I wasn't on bballman. The article is spot on. But to many parents are caught up in their kid being a stud NOW. Allow your player to rest often during games because the time will come when they will be called on to put in the long days on the field. It's ok to have more than 10-12 kids on a team. ( it will also lower your playing fees)

Too many coaches are caught up in the Win column and not devoloping their players. We have seen teams rely on 2-3 pitchers for a 2 day tournament. Why not work with the other 7-9 players to distribute the innings and number of pitches per player?

This is so true. Always playing to be the #1 seed, or to get the by. Then you go to the next tournament and then your guys who haven't been pitching get called upon and can't throw strikes, and you wonder why. Develop the players, give everyone a chance, limit your innings pitched as well as innings played. Each player needs a break, not just the pitchers.

If you, as a parent, approach your players' head coach and request him to have a rest period due to fatigue and potential injury, and he ignores your request is that the team you want to be on? As a coach I take responsibility in the health and well being of the players. We are a 9yr old team and our goal is to prepare the players for high school. Sounds like a utopia. But in my experience, if you're not the coach, you don't know as much as coach. Don't question coach. Don't cross coach. If you do, you'll either be in search of another team, or your boy is riding the pine for extended periods. Again, that's in my experience.

Allbaseball - I think that bballman is presenting the information to help parents or even coaches who don't know what the limitations should be. Some parents just blindly entrust their kid's wellbeing to the coaches. Sometimes it's the kids who trust their coaches or even parents when they say your arm is okay, when the kid say that it's a little sore...and that little soreness turns into a bigger problem. This is good information that we should all adhere to.

Here's another article that I found this morning...

Something to think about before you invest in a radar gun for your kid.

Great article! Too bad, too many coaches or 'decision makers' won't read or take heed of such advice.
