I'm asking for a friend of mine, her son is 13 and he was just offered a pitcher only spot on a 13u team, I thought that was a bit early for PO....but maybe I'm wrong.

At what age did you notice your son's team had pitcher only roster spots?

POs have usually been (in my experience)on (presumed) better/high level logo teams who are trying to win tournaments as in, every single one they enter/every time. Typically, the parents are chasing that name/logo on the jersey and the kid is conditioned to want the same at the expense of playing time. POs are very common in the 15U & up ages and typically show up to their start, pitch and leave.

As others have suggested, I agree that unless the kid is not very good at baseball, to get him on a team where he can play a position, pitch, hit and has a chance to improve. Many world beaters at 13U often don't make it at the later levels, high school etc. Let him play where he has fun and can determine what he really wants to do.

We have a friend who' son was caught up 3 years ago to play for an EC team. He tried out with our program, but a year up...not with his grade. He didn't make the upper level team, he wasn't good enough...and subsequently went to EC. He could have helped us that year, started a lot of games and improved his own game. He chose to go the the team that he considered was a better team. He got good coaching but didn't play as often or where he wanted and sat a lot. He ended up coming back to our program with his grade the next year and has been a great fit, a solid starter and a great team mate and never left.

Don't do it. Already a challenge to make a HS team. Lots of fun years left to play the game. Enjoy it!
My 2016 was pushed in that direction. Now he is courted by some colleges for pitching, and some for hitting. On our 17u national PG ranked travel team, 18 roster spots there are 2 PO's and 3 position players that do not pitch. (2 C, 1 SS).
All others are 2 way.
But know that colleges are mostly looking mashers, Pitching, up the middle players. Lots of 2 ways in HS!

I agree, that seems a little young to be making that move. Unless, of course, the player is just not competitive at the plate or in a position on the field. Sometimes a player can play on a much higher level team as a pitcher than he could as a position player and the family may choose to go that route. I would think there is still time to mature at 13, so giving it up might not be the best idea. Maybe not though. It really comes down to what the family and player wants to accomplish out of their baseball experience.

They seem to start at 14 with a lot more come high school. At 13, unless the kid just cannot swing the bat, I would not do it. (We did have a kid on our 14u team who just could not get a hit. Both he and his parents knew that the only way he could continue playing was as a PO)
