We have discussions going on about the 9U teams, 10U, 13U and 14U teams, might as well see what 11U teams ya’ll think will be strong in 2009? ECB and outside of EC as well.

My top 8 teams are:
East Cobb Stars
Georgia Roadrunners
Southern Jaguars
East Cobb Longhorns
Academy A's
Kennesaw Xtreme
East Cobb Braves
South Forsyth Renegades

I have watched all of these teams and they all have a great pitching staff and a great starting lineup.

A tournament to watch out for is the Battle in the South. The Southern Jaguars, Georgia Roadrunners, Kennesaw Xtreme, GBC Team Acceleration, and many more talented teams are in it. It will be interesting to see if GBC plays a team from Georgia. I wonder how they would match up. The tournament is on April 24-26.

You guys need to come down to Florida and seek out some good 11u competition. The Southern Jags are coming down to play in the USSSA Florida Elite Invitational NIT next month with many of the top 11u teams from Central Florida Playing.
Southern Jags
Central Florida Bobcats
Central Florida Sundevils
Team Combat
Tampa Crush
Tampa Venom
SWFL Hawks
as well as others.
The USSSA site here is www.FloridaEliteBaseball.com
They are actually merging with Florida Travel Ball soon. Check them out.

The Alabama Bombers made an impressive run to finish second in the NIT championship this past weekend. Looks like several of these teams will be seeing each other again in a couple of weeks...Nothing like watching travel baseball in GA!!!

After 2 big USSSA tournaments, the Jaguars are 5-1 vs. same class(only loss coming to the Longhorns) Stars are 7-2 (Jaguars and AL. Bombers)and the Longhorns are 7-1 (Stars). Second tier seems to be Colonels 3-4, Roadrunners 3-2.With Kenn. Extreme,Red Sox and Academy A's right behind. Spring Nationals should be interesting!

You are correct, Crushers. I went online and found out that the score of the 2 games in the G Force Freeze tournament were 10 - 1 and 11 - 2, so the total score wasn't 20-2 but was 21-3, so I apologize.

And I'm not taking anything away from the Yankees, because they are a very good team as well. But with all due respect, they didn't have to play the Georgia Roadrunners and the Southern Jaguars as two of their teams or I doubt they would have been there on Sunday as well. And I will point out that the Hobgood Extreme scored 6 runs against the Jaguars; whereas the rest of the teams scored something like 7 runs combined in the other 6 games, so they're doing something right.

I did see that both the Yankees and the Extreme are registered as AAA teams. I wouldn't be surprised to see them start playing some more teams rated as Majors soon. I think it would be an interesting matchup to watch them versus the EC Colt 45s or the EC Titans.

Hobgood Extreme is a very talented team and Team Wilson is as well. Team Wilson is still working out some of the kinks. Your statements regarding the score against the Yankees was not quite right, but that is ok. The Yankees actually made it to Sunday in the Slugfest and Hobgood Extreme never made it out of Saturday play. The ECB Yankees played some hard teams as well did Hobgood. ECB Yankees ended up tied for 5th with several other ECB teams. When Sunday came around there were five ECB teams remaining out of eight. The ECB Stars played a great championship game, but congratulations go to the Southern Jaguars. I know this because my grandson plays for the Yankees and I was there.

I saw that game as well and I was very impressed with both Milton and Hobgood. I really liked the SS for Extreme, not a big kid but he could play. Milton had a couple of kids that could hit the ball a long way as well, even with the wood.

Hobgood Extreme has not played Team Wilson yet, but I have no doubt who the better team is. While Team Wilson appears to have upgraded their team this year, the Hobgood Extreme appears to be the better team. Both teams are out of Hobgood.

Both teams played in a tournament up in Cumming in February. After pool play, Extreme was the #1 seed and Team Wilson was #2 seed. Extreme ended up winning the tournament, going 4 - 0, and beating the East Cobb Yankees in the finals for the second time in the tournament. (Incidentally, that Yankees team that made it to the final 16 of the Slugfest lost to the Extreme twice by a combined score of like 20 - 2 in that tournament, if I remember correctly from what I was told). The Yankees defeated Team Wilson in the semi-final game via a 10 run mercy rule.

One of my children used to play at Hobgood, so I still speak with many of my friends from there. One of them told me that the Extreme was playing last night and I was able to go watch them win another tournament at ATPP. This time, it was a wood bat tournament. Both pitchers for the Extreme threw well and the defense and hitting was outstanding. Hobgood beat a pretty impressive Milton Mavericks team 8 - 4 to win the tournament.

While I was at the game, I had a chance to talk with one of the fans of the Extreme (I assume it was a parent of one of the players) and they raved about their coaches. They said their players all love to compete and their coaches do a really good job of keeping practice fun and competitive while still doing a lot of teaching.

To me, they look like a very good team that is well-coached and has a lot of fun together.

Has the Hobgood Extreme played Team Wilson at all this season? Anyone care to say who is better? I assume both teams are out of Hobgood?

After watching the teams compete this weekend in the Slugfest I must say that the teams to watch are as follows:

Jaguars
Stars
EC Braves
Mill Creek
Road Runners
Xtreme

The Longhorns will regroup and find themselves in the top 5 by years end

Bruce Bruce!! Wassup! Your number has changed. Good to know all things are good on the baseball side!

I first saw Battlefield Red Sox in '07! Remember them Bruce? They beat Team Wilson twice, including the championship, to win an early season tournament in Dalton. They were one of the five to seven best Georgia teams in '07 at 9U. Along with the Chattanooga Colonels those were two outstanding teams a lot of people knew little about unless they were really part of a travel club. They were an athletic club then. Think they played a low key schedule last season. Looking at their tournament choices they expect to be competitive.

What's up with the comment Bruins1 about experimenting with kids pitching who they don't usually use? Why don't they usually use them? Coaches are responsible for developing players. Anyway!

Speed doesn't go into slumps! And it is one of the 5 tools. Downplay it if you want, but a slow team has limitations. The inability to get an extra base (1st to 3rd or 2nd to home) can hurt a team in close defensive games. Slow teams can't tag up as often, can't defend well hit balls in the outfield that must be chased down as well, can't stay out of the force out as well either. Slow teams are often forced to sacrifice outs to advance runners more often that a speedy team that can take a base to stay out of the force.

I think scrimmages are useful and sometimes a better indication of a teams overall strength than a tournament. In most tournaments managers play to win with their best foot forward. When you see teams scrimmage and move players around frequently and change pitchers every inning you see if they miss a beat or not.

Any news on teams scrimmaging so far? Who's played who?

We had the fortunate opportunity to play a doubleheader scrimmage with the Academy A's yesterday. They looked really good! We played two four-inning games and both pitched a different player every inning. They have added three outstanding ball players after losing only one big bat from last year's club. One of those three is as good as any player in Georgia. 5-tool talent! I expect them to be one of Georgia's 10 best! We split our two games.

Looks like the Battelfield Redsox is going to be a team to watch in the 11u this year...They are playing in the ATL and AL Super Nit's as well as Border Wars.. They pick up the top 3 players from the Reebok Suns so this may be a sleeper...

Coach Bruce Posted - 02/13/2009 : 23:18:07
Hobgood Extreme has good coaches. They have a couple Ex-Kennesaw Extreme players. 3 players that went to Cooperstown last year and the rest are Hobgood's best All Stars from the year before. They should not be ranked in anybodys lowest tier. The are not going to be the best in the nation but they will give you a good game.

I don't care what the team name is I would not bet against Rusty.
The Titians got our best pitcher and seem loaded and ready to go.
We saw the Kennesaw Extreme in Disney as 9u and then again in Cooperstown last year. They are always good.
How can you beat the Road Runners, with a ball park like that. If you have ever played there you know what I mean.

That sounds like a good idea Kerminator; playing up in the fall. We did the instuctional sessions at ATPP in the older age group and it was a challenge but we did see good results. Good Luck this year.

It looks like I picked a good year to be watching from the sidelines in a comfy chair. Have fun.
bruins1 Posted - 02/13/2009 : 22:53:20
Speed is important, but its useless to have if you hit nothing but popups or K more often than not at the plate. At 11U I'll take a good fundamental ball player with good hands, a good bat, who knows how to get a good jump on the ball and who can throw strikes over a kids with speed but who otherwise has no tools.

Preseason scrimmaging is pretty useless in trying to figure out who is going to be good and who is not. Coaches experiment, pitch kids they usually do not use, don't bunt much, let the kids swing away 3-0 (or at least they should), and otherwise are trying to get the kinks out.
Goin Deep Posted - 02/13/2009 : 16:10:34
Not sure if the Stars will be better or not...They were pretty slow as a team last year, and lost at least 2 of their speed players...With the additional 5 feet on the base paths, a grounder is an automatic out for alot of their hitters. Seems alot of the 11u teams in early scrimmaging dont know yet what they have. Should be fun.
bmoser Posted - 02/02/2009 : 08:49:26
They'll be scrimmaging Mill Creek soon. You'd have to ask the MC Coach for more info. A MC Dad told me so yesterday. 2 of Mill Creek's 9 '08 losses were to South Forsyth, so I'm sure Mill Creek would put them on their list of top 11u teams.

2-4 instead of 3-3. You're right coach, I was way off. My deepest regrets.

The Georgia Roadrunners have always been well coached and they have good solid players. They beat some very good teams at the Kennesaw Tournament last year. In fact, they played the Jaguars, Longhorns, and Astros/Stars (I think) and either won or were competitive in every game.

The Stars struggled with the EC Braves, The Roadrunners, and a couple of the Gwinnett teams last year. From what I have heard, this team has some serious thump in their lineup and can run 8 or 9 out there to pitch competitively...........unlike last year. They are also very well coached. If they play as a team, watch out!

The Longhorns are also very well coached and are always scary. Make a couple of mistakes and the game is over. This is one of those teams that do not give up a lot of runs.

The Jaguars have speed and 3 or 4 hard throwers. They also have about 5 kids who can jack it out anytime/anywhere.

The National scene is a tougher one to call. Suffice to say that the teams from Florida and California will be the ones that dominate consistently and the GA teams in Tier I will be right there with them if they bring their A games (perhaps putting GA Roadrunners in Tier I is in order).

LMC, Tometaros, GBC.....those are the teams you look at to set your bar.

mrump Posted - 01/31/2009 : 09:47:20
w/o mentioning any names their seems to be a few coaches out there that do nothing but recruit the best players so they can win it all, but does this make you good coaches? NO, all your doing is putting experienced players who have already been taught how to play on the fields. Where do you come into the picture with developing these kids to the next level? i have seen lots of kids come and go throughout the years and the ones that were learning from their coaches seemed to have moved on to the next level. their seems to be a lot of egos that need to be stroked! I CALL EM LIKE I SEEM EM...
Mike Corbin Posted - 01/30/2009 : 17:11:51
Sorry Marinersfan but the Astros were 0-4 against the Roadrunners last spring/summer. The Astros did go 2-0 against the Roadrunners in the fall of the previous year. With the Roadrunners not having their full team.

Just to throw my two cents in, I think that the Astros(now the Stars) are one of the most improved teams around. The Roadrunners had 5 players move on to other teams and they added 4 VERY good players in their slots. We should be much improved as well. The Longhorns lost one of their better pitchers to the Stars. However, they always seem to come up with a talented team. The Jaguars should be very good again this year. South Forsyth Renegades will also be very good again. Kennesaw will be one of the interesting stories to me. Their head coach moved on and they lost another player to the Stars. Still look for them to be good.

I think that this time of year we are all feeling pretty good about our teams. It will be fun to see how it all plays out on the field. Good luck to everyone this spring/summer and we will see you at the field.
