We are looking at what to do the last weeks of summer after our last tourney and before school starts (approx 4 weeks). I think we have a good idea in a sleep away camp that is completely unrelated to baseball. Our son is 10 and is playing his first full season of travel baseball and will probably have 2-3 times as many games as last year so we thougt best to take a baseball break before school starts.

I would love to have the feedback from you and your thoughts about what ages stop when, and what sounds best after the season etc. We are pretty close to signing him up but wanted some feedback before we committed.

Don't forget that kids want to swim at the pool in the summer and also want to be able to go to birthday parties. Unfortunately birthday parties typically happen on Friday night, Saturday, or Sunday, the same days as tournaments. Once the season ends, I believe it is important to let players do these activities. They have to feel they can have some time to just have fun.

I think we plan to shut down the baseball season early July. The camp we were looking at is unrelated to baseball (BMX biking, inline skating, skateboarding) and he seems to be very excited about doing this.

Last year he did 2 weeks at Cal Ripken summer camp. He liked it but I was not so impressed. It was mainly a camp for kids who did not know how to play and have parents who want them to get better.

But again, I would love to hear about the going to the pool, staying around town or other experiences everyone has with what they do when summer baseball ends.

Ronald,
It will probably be a personal evaluation that you will have to conduct closer to the end of the season. My son has not typically wanted to do a July camp because he has had a lot of baseball by that time and it is usually hot in the south. Going to the pool vs going to a camp has always been a pretty easy decision for him. The pool always seemed to be more inviting.

Now I know several other players that go to camps each year and love it. My son will probably attend more this year because he knows it is time to do so, but under 13 is all up to how much the player wants to do it.

This being the first full season for your son in travel ball you don't really know whether he is going to need a break at the end or not.

Baseball never needs to be a chore for them, and having to go to a camp when they need a break can make for a miserable experience.

On the other hand, he may really be excited about going and love being there. Unfortunately you won't know that until you get closer to the end of the season.

When is your team planning on shutting down for the season?

Has he been to camp before and did he like it? If he's got some buddies in the neighborhood and access to a pool, you may not need to find him something "to do".

I try to give the football players a month off, so we typically end on or about July 4. We go on a family vacation, then let our kids "do nothing" for the last 3-4 weeks of summer.
