Posted - 01/14/2009 : 14:25:42 Family moving from Philadelphia area to East Cobb/Marietta end of June 2009, son hopes to attend The Walker School in the fall. Anyway, could use some advice for my 14 year old son. He has played 5 years of Little League (age 8-12), plus last summer 2008 he played for an elite 13U travel/tournament team for All Star Baseball Academy, a well-respected instructional facility here. Plays P/OF/3B. Questions are:
1. he will play ball up here in Spring, if we get down there end of june, when would be his next chance to play - fall 2009?
2. Any advice on teams, leagues, or people to contact in the area?
Any advice is greatlty appreciated. |

Posted - 01/19/2009 : 00:19:24 east cobb east cobb I get so sick that everyone thinks east cobb is so great. They have a nice complex but if it rains just a little you don't get on the field. And the tournaments out of east cobb $450.00 plus gate charge. Look around there are alot of great travel teams other than east cobb teams. |

My son has never played there, but in his age group there are 4 teams that I would be absolutely comfortable him playing for, a couple less so. A couple of the good ones are even coached by the dreaded dads. Pretty normal really.
We are fortunate to have such a great facility in the area. |

Posted - 01/17/2009 : 00:37:09 The reason East Cobb gets brought up is no other baseball organization in this area has as many teams at each age group as they do. It just means there are more potential opportunities there. As I said in my original post, I am sure others will provide their tryout schedules for next year, but I am not going to stop recommending someone look at East Cobb just because some people are bothered by it. When we moved down here from TN 4 years ago, we tried out with an EC team, along with several others. We chose to go somewhere else at that time. We went to a second park before finally making our way to EC. So yes there are other programs in the area that are really good as well, but if people are asking about potential opportunities in the area, you cannot have the conversation without mentioning East Cobb. |

Posted - 01/16/2009 : 18:27:28 qui-gon.jinn,I didn't want to infer that East Cobb was the only option, but one of the options he should consider. His son can't be in Atlanta till later in the year And I know coach Roberts will look players thru-out the the entire season.I must respectfull disagree that there a few good coaches. I know for a fact that they have many good coaches.I base our opinion on the fact that we have played out East Cobb for five years. |

Posted - 01/16/2009 : 11:35:25 IMHO, most of the folks on this board are way, WAY too east cobb-centric if you will. there are many travel teams playing out of many, MANY different parks and all of varying quality (the good, the bad, the ugly). east cobb is not necessarily the only place in town. nor is it all things to all people, try tho they might. (firestorm starter ignited) even at 13 and 14, there are WAY too many dads coaching and managing teams. and those generally are the ones to avoid if possible.
having said that, if you choose that route, before you finalize any decision, talk to folks in and out of the east cobb system. there are a few (a very few) good coaches at east cobb. but there are good coaches at shaw park, sandy plains, sandy springs, east side, hobgood. and there are good teams that don't necessarily play out of a park, or represent an association (as many of the aforementioned do). |

Posted - 01/15/2009 : 14:31:32 Go to 14yr East Cobb Astros web site and submit your info to Coach Dave Roberts he is always looking for good players.Dave is arguably the best coach in the East Cobb system and East Cobb has some of the best coaches in the country. |

Posted - 01/14/2009 : 23:19:33 Down here, most travel teams hold their tryouts for the next season in August. The East Cobb tryouts are typically the 3rd weekend in August. You can find them on www.eastcobbbaseball.com
I am sure other people will have other tryout information as well.
The biggest question is around June and July. There will probably be some travel teams needing a player around that time as the 14 and older groups are just getting started good. Someone will have a player get hurt in JV and need someone, or looking to add an additional player.
Good luck and welcome to the Atlanta area. There is no shortage of travel baseball teams down here. |
