Doc, did you get the impression that I'm a bat sharing guy? Refer back to my first post on the topic.

Jay,
Then I assume as a coach you provide team bats for players to use, right?

A coach may not agree with your perspective on sharing bats, but he sure better have enough respect for the players request to at least talk about it. As a coach, if you feel like they should all share, then buy 4 or 5 bats, as a team. Don't say "They should all share, but the parents need to fork over the money." At least if the team buys them, no one says they don't have a bat to use.
The phrase "did you bring enough for everyone?" falls under your job description as the coach, not the parents. Unless you have specified earlier that "everyone needs to bring their own bat." which takes us back to the original point of "everyone needs to use their own bat."

This is like politics. Some say everyone should share, others say everyone should bring their own.

There won't ever be an agreed upon answer, but everyone has to find their own right answer.

Ok, I laffed myself silly on that too. I'm not likely to use that one in any team discussions on sharing though. In any event, these same kids are going to be asked by their friends to borrow money, cars, God knows what else. Better to use this as a parental teaching opportunity rather than dump it in the coaches lap. Heck, the coach might not agree with your perspective on sharing bats. Maybe to him their like cookies... "did you bring enough for everyone?"

This is why I only buy aluminium bats now. Been through two catalyst and both broke. I got a old 34 inch easton black magic from when i was in high school and it still hits good. Give me the alum. anyday. It is the hitter not the bat. If you are the coach you got to let other kids use it for the reasons 743 says. I am guilty and have spent money on bats like the rest of you but now spend the money on something he will use more a good glove and maybe some ice cream for the team or something.

When he is done using it for say BP, put it back in his bag. If someone wants to "try it out" okay. But at 12u make sure your son addresses the fact that it is a "tryout" and not for everyone to run thru bp. If it's a gamer only then I say share and tell the parents of who is sharing where you bought it and that you can give them the phone number, or salesperson you got it from. Maybe they can take a hint.

They are hard to come by...

Others should not touch them...
and certainly, no "Swinging" allowed

I agree with a previous post that an announcement by the Team Manager
would be the best approach to getting the message across while maintaining
good team standings.

I am always willing to share I want my children to feel the same

But this is not always a practical way to behave especially with an expensive bat and nowadays most of them are

the high end models crack very easily for weather , certain amount of use you name it

Someone said they only have so many hits in them that is a fact

So my take is for the coach to upfront announce to the parents and kids they bring their own bats its like bringing your own shoes.

If theyre invited by the owner of the bat to use it then it is a different story.

Should keep all the awkwardness out of it but we have seen recent a parent have no problem with his kid use someone else bat and it ended up broken. Once his own kid got a new bat no one else could use it !

one thing I had my son do was when his at bat was done...he put the bat back in his bag rather than out with the other bats. The kids got the message pretty quick that he didnt want everyone using it. The got their owm :o)

As a rule players shouldn't be asking other players to use their $200.00+ bats. Those things don't last forever. A one time swing is one thing, but continuous use is quite another (continuous use includes one player asking followed by the rest of the team).

Letting the coach do it is just passing the buck and not teaching your son anything in the process. I'd teach him a diplomatic way of saying no. Perhaps a .."Sure." in response to the first request in order to simply be polite and then a "This is the only bat that mom and dad are going to buy me this year and I need it to last the whole season. One hit isn't going to hurt, but if I keep lending it out it will wear out faster."

See if the team will reimburse you for the bat, and have it has a team bat.If not, the coach needs to cover that topic with the players. It can easily be handled by the coach.

As you know, the new shiny bat always gets attention from all the players. We have been on both sides of that issue. Guess it doesn't bother me either way. We break it, we buy it. Pretty simple.

And as far as bats only having so many hits. What I found is some bats (for some unknown reason) just have a lot of pop and continue to be good bats for a long, long time. If you can recall the C555 seemed to be a great bat for years of abuse. We have an Omaha that way. It just hits so good and it has had years of abuse from 3 kids. And have bought new bats that we were just not happy with from day one. Don't know how to describe it but that is our experience. So I don't follow the only so many good hits belief.
biged Posted - 02/02/2009 : 12:08:22
I say they can use it in games only. Let his teammates know that bats have a limited life span (usually one season) and you don't want the bat used up in bp.
ballmom Posted - 02/02/2009 : 11:19:51
My son has always shared and he is not willing to with his new bat-so I guess you could say he is a little frustrated!!! I think at twelve and in travel ball that parents should invest in their son a bat, borrow to try-out is fine thats how we got this bat picked out but not to expect to have it to use all the time!!!!! So what do we do without causing team situation? Thanks Greg I knew you would come through with help, anyone else?????
Tyler Posted - 02/01/2009 : 20:13:52
How does he feel about it? With my first new bat I don't want anybody using it. It being his first bat I would suggest that only your son used it, but this is only my opinion.
greglomax Posted - 02/01/2009 : 19:35:57
This always such a touchy subject. I know how you feel. I don't mind players using my son's bat to see if they like it before buying one, but to use it all the time, knowing it only has so many hits in it, makes me uncomfortable. Especially since they are so expensive these days. The hard part is "How do you address it?" I would suggest talking to the coach and let him address it as a team message and not individually.

What happens if one of these other kids uses it and it dents or breaks?
