Posted - 02/04/2009 : 09:49:49 What would the outcome be if you stacked up the top teams from the Cooperstown tourney vs. the Little League World Series teams using travel ball rules(mound and base dimensions, lead offs, etc.)? Excuse me if this has already been covered in the past. |

Posted - 02/10/2009 : 15:50:45 CoachDad, I think it is a reasonable thing to discuss. LL is not available everywhere. The closest to us here in Roswell is in Buckhead. We're not moving to Buckhead just to play LL. When that Columbus LL team was playing in the WS, my son was 12 yrs. old. We often sat there and talked about and wondered how he would stack up against those guys. I know for a fact that at least one of those guys continues to be pretty darn good. The lefty they are talking about above. Haven't really followed the rest. Fact of the matter is, LL draws from a smaller geographic area than TB are capable of and LL is not available everywhere. Logic would indicate that if you can draw from a bigger area, you have the potential to be better. On the other hand, there are so many TB teams in North Georgia, the talent really gets spread out among a ton of different teams, so maybe not. It is still something you have to wonder about. |

Posted - 02/10/2009 : 14:02:50 What response were you expecting on this board... really? Before I moved here to Travel Ball Heaven in the North Atlanta area, LL Baseball was the only game in town except for one or two travel ball teams that picked up players from the local league. The league is well run even though the coaches are all the fathers of players.
Would you deny that the Senior League team from that league who won the state championship in GA could compete with your vaunted East Cobb teams? Would it matter if I told you how many from that one poor county team went on to sign college schlarships or that one player just played in the CWS finals last year?
Probably not... travel ball is always better than Little League, Dizzy Dean, Babe Ruth.. etc. It sure does cost more... ergo, right? |

Posted - 02/10/2009 : 07:57:10 The folks that really keep up with youth baseball knows that these kids jump back and forth between leagues and play whenever possible, some are on 3-5 rosters at a time! It dosen't matter about the organization they play in, just the talent level of the athlete! There were several kids that played in the little league world series that we seen on other teams while playing them in major tournaments. They like playing on TV, who wouldn't! |

Posted - 02/09/2009 : 20:48:02 i have seen the team from columbus that won the llws. if i remember correctly they were the copperheads as a travel team. anyway, they were very good. not a juggernaut but very good. our local team was just as good and we had a very solid squad for three years running. there was, and still is, one kid from that columbus team who plays for the astros. he is a very accomplished pitcher- though i would argue that the 14u astros last year had two kids who were better- and i would know because we played them 4 times. as a hitter- i dont recall him standing out over and above the other highly talented kids on that roster. that's not to say he isnt a good hitter. just that they had many good hitters. i can tell you though that he has the best pickoff move i have ever seen. |

Posted - 02/09/2009 : 15:23:09 Again we are talking about a LL Team vs. an Elite Travel Team..........one kid from Columbus...even if he his the best player....will not dominate an Elite team...IMO...Great topic guys....quote: Originally posted by baseball21
I can assure you, the astros had one player try out and he absolutely made the team.He is considered by some people the best players on the team. For the record he is a left handed power hiter, that plays the outfield, and a dominating pitcher.

I was told kids from that team tried out at ECB and none of them made it. I don't think that LL rules allow it to be as good and it is not real baseball. Ditto's on the field size / dimensions.
Who were you were told by?
And who from the Columbus team tried out at East Cobb?

Posted - 02/06/2009 : 09:38:27 Please don't miss what I am trying to say....I realize that many of those kids play TB....but the question was can the best LL team go toe to toe with an Elite TB team....the key is Team not a few individuals....I feel that the Tb team has an advantage because they can pull from anywhere were as the LL team is held to their local area....I wonder how the Columbus travel team from a few years ago did against the Elite Tb teams that summer????? quote: Originally posted by 3sondad
Do you guys not realized that LL players also play travel ball? So to say discuss TB would beat LL or LL would beat TB is like arguing with yourself. Two examples: 1) Team Miami - came in second in Cooperstown last year (Ran into one heck of pitcher from NV) and they won their region in LL. The team they beat protested some rule about playing under the same name in other leagues (travel Ball) and the other team was able to move on to the LLWS. 2) The team from Columbus that won a few years ago, those boys played on a couple of travel teams that year. Under LL rules you cannot officially start practicing until June 15th. What do you think these teams do that month? They are the team names you see at the tournaments that you do not recognize.

Posted - 02/05/2009 : 17:00:25 This is like comparing apples to watermelons....
A Little League "league" is limited to it's boundaries determined by the total population of the geographic area. Travel Ball teams can have players from anywhere they choose. Of course Travel Ball teams should be "stronger" or at least they should.
The biggest difference is depth, a typical Little League team may have 1 or 2 elite players and a travel ball team should have considerably more as they have a larger area to pull players from.
Little League requires that a league cannot have a total population exceeding 20,000 people. Take your local field and expand it out by 20,000 people (not households but total population) and you now have your new league boundaries as well as all the kids that could play in that league.
On average, if you live more than +/- 4 miles from that local park than you can't play in that local Little League league, you have to form a new league.
Little League may have its flaws and they have many however it is a very structured organization where everyone plays by the same rules and at the end of the year you know who's the best in the local area, State, Region, United States and World playing under the Little League system. |

Posted - 02/05/2009 : 15:06:06 I suggested that in my post...but the travel team does have some freedoms that the LL teams dont have...example pick up a player from out of state to pitch/play. There lies the biggest difference. There for when you get deeper in the pitching the Travel Team has many more resources to pul;l from. |

Posted - 02/05/2009 : 10:36:07 Elite Travel ball....no contest....if they are using TB rules...LL is like arena football....high octane from average pitchers from short mounds which makes it look a lot better than it is....small fields and they don't lead off bases therefore pitchers are not under the same pressures nor are the catchers... I am not saying that LL kids do not have a future in baseball but most LL kids are from one community where as Elite travel teams usually come from a larger area...there are some fine players in LL for sure but I feel that the Warner Robins team from a few years back could not have stacked up toe to toe with their same age group of say the EC Astros....I am not talking about individuals here or cracking on LL kids...I am merely talking about playing LL best vs. TB best....JMO |

Posted - 02/04/2009 : 10:50:06 I think we as "travel ball" fans want to think there would be no contest. But I feel the teams that make it to the Little League World Series are very capable teams. As a matter of fact most of those teams play some version of travel ball. The diference is going to be in pitching depth where in a 1 game match up of their best against an elite travel ball teams best it would probably be a pretty good game. But when you get into matchups of #2-6 pitchers its not close. |
