I think it is ok to privately ask a coach about a particular technique. It's ok to say "I was just curious as to that particular technique. We have had other coaches teach it "this way" and I was wondering about why one is better than the other." Then let them explain it to you. Maybe in the discussion, they realize that they were teaching it the wrong way, or you at least get an idea of his rationale.

It is kind of like the rundown. Most coaches teach to follow your throw, but there is an alternate coaching method to throw and curl to your previous bag, which cuts down on the needed players for the rundown and also reduces the possibility of interference with the runner.

I think players need to understand multiple techniques and know why they are doing one vs another.

Who knows when they may be coached using the alternate technique (HS, College, etc).

Great Read.... question, what do you do if your coach is teaching something completely wrong. Opposite of what high school and college coaches are teaching? Lets say crossing your feet when you get a lead at first base, just as an example?
I have told my son do it the way your coach is showing you although at the end of the season I will show you another way to do it. Does this contradict the coach or should I say nothing until the season is over?

Nice article...It would be great if something like this could be posted on the gates of every dugout so we are all constantly reminded what we're really here for.
