My son was hit by a lacrosse ball and broke his nose and cracked his cheek. (note to others - discourage lacrosse during the baseball season) My question is does anyone have any experience as to recovery time?
The ER doctor said 6 weeks but I am leaning towards targeting 4.5 weeks (directly after spring break). The main concern is getting hit again but in general if you take a pitch or a line drive to the cheek you are basically going to the ER regardless of prior injury. I think the biggest risk of coming back early is getting tagged in the face, but since he is a pitcher, we can use a DH until we reach 6 weeks.
Any input is appreciated. |

Thanks for the input. I do believe they require facemasks in lacrosse, but this was an informal injury. I will check out the game face mask and see if it impacts his pitching. Since he is a U14 player and he wasn't hit in a baseball situation, I think the mental part will be OK, but I am struggling with the risk of further injury versus being overconservative. The positive thing is that he can pitch simulated games to keep his arm in shape for when he returns.
I am definitely holding him out through spring break (4 weeks). |

Had a 13U player break his nose and cheek bone at Spring Break one year (hit the knee of another player), he was cleared to play 6 weeks later WITH A MASK in the field and at the plate. Kid waited 2 more weeks to play without the mask in the field.
Even with the "cage" mask, had a 12U kid hit in the mask, bent the mask and the kid's chek was cut. I would also worry about a foul ball off the bat into the face. Wait it out, don't rush it. |

I'm no doctor but I would not rush back after an injury like that. If there was any bleeding which I assume there was quite a bit there is a chance of breaking scabs or scar tissue with any activity that elevates the heart rate. Check with a ENT specialist just to be sure |

Two years ago, a player on my team broke his nose. The doctors told him to go get a facemask for his helmet and allowed him to play the next day, as long as he wore the helmet in the field. He kept it on for about a week and then got tired of it and quit putting it back on. Every time he took it off for the first 3 or 4 weeks, I made sure his mother knew that I wasn't condoning it but they were fine with it and he never got hit again.
I think if you do the facemask thing, he could play soon, if not now. |

I would recommend getting him one of the "Game Face" masks to wear until you feel it is completely healed. It will give him the protection he needs until it is completely healed. Especially if he is a pitcher. I would be as worried at getting a line drive hit back at him on the mound as I would be on him getting tagged in the face.
As for getting tagged in the face, I would recommend getting one of the C-flaps, or a cage to put on his helmet until it is completely healed as well. Just as a precaution.
Just a couple of thoughts. I hope he heals quickly. |
