Posted - 05/12/2009 : 22:00:31 Papa, I have a question. I heard The Chiefs were pulling out of this weekends tournament because the Florida boys could not be there. Is this true? |

Posted - 05/12/2009 : 15:21:16 I don't like the score against common opponents pick. In our last tournament we had a umpire ask us if we would quit batting so the other team could hit and the game could end. We had a runner on third and first and no outs. This could have came back to haunt us but we do not want to run the score up on these teams. Also, if you do it by common scores you are less likely to try out a new pitcher in a game . In that same tournament we gave up 13 runs in 5 games. Well I had two kids pitch for me who have not got a chance all year long to pitch. They gave up 5 runs but we kept them out there when they got in trouble to see how they would respond.
I am sure there is a better way |

Posted - 05/12/2009 : 14:58:16 Shut Out: I agree 100% with what you said about just getting on with it and playing the next tournament. The problem with this particular tournament was that it was being played for the berth at Disney so there was more at stake than just a trophy. The Bandits got the berth but still are not sure if we can go. |

Posted - 05/12/2009 : 09:36:41 If they bracket games aren't played why declare a winner are all. If it's not about the trophy and about making your team better just get on with it and play the next tournament. |

Posted - 05/12/2009 : 09:33:41 I like the scores of common opponents but that was another one of my concerns with this Super NIT. There were no common opponents which may be a first for this type tournament. We played in different pools which is common but then the brackets had us playing the same 2 teams that we had just beaten in the pools. Not one crossover game or common opponent betweeen the 2 pools. We would not have played the other pool until the championship game. |

To decide the victors of rained out tourneys where 2 have equal records, why not use scores vs common opponents, if there are any.
Or how about avg power rating (if usssa tourney) for teams beaten? If not usssa, cumulative winning % of teams beaten in that tourney.
Just thinking out loud here. Brainstorming. |

Posted - 05/11/2009 : 22:41:28 How would co-champions work for the two teams that were undefeated with the trophy size being decided by a coin flip. We quit playing for trophies a long time ago. The thrill of the competition is enough for us. Championships should be decided on the field. I don't know the answer and we realize that the tournaments cannot control Mother nature. |

Posted - 05/11/2009 : 21:49:44 Out of the three pool play games Stixx and sandtown twice played the same opponent. In the bracket games Stixx looks like they played the tougher teams. Not sure if I understand you reasoning on this. Maybe you will get to play them this weekend in the North Atlanta Triple Crown event.

Papa we ran into that same scenario up in Alabama. The Red Sox were 5-0 and the Stixx were 5-0 the Stixx won the tournament based on pool play, but we played tougher opponnents. We have to come up with a better system to declare winners in situations like that. Both teams have legitimate claims.

Other than that, seeding out of pool play is the only way. I hear people talk about giving it to the team still in the tournament with the highest USSSA points, but I don't agree with that at all. It would totally throw out any play during the tournament. That being said, if the tournament were to be rained out without pool games being completed, that is how they would award the berths. |

Posted - 05/11/2009 : 13:32:45 That is a shame. I would also like to know if there is a better way. We had something similar happen to us two weeks ago . The championship game got rained out and we along with another team where 5-0 in the tournament. We received the 1st place but we didn't win it. I was very proud of the boys but something was still missing. You have to win on the field. I told our boys I thought we where the best team there and it was shame we would not get to prove it. |

Posted - 05/11/2009 : 09:40:58 Papa is tired of the rain. For the last 3 weekends, first in Loudon, Tennessee, then in Nashville, Tennessee and finally in Florence, Alabama the rain has factored in the tournaments. The Bandits were on fire and ready to finish out the Alabama Super NIT but before the brackets started the rains came and the decision was made again on seeds.
Our Coach made the statement that we were not playing for the seed but that we were playing to win the tournament and in the process of attempting to win the tournament of course saved the top pitching for the championship bracket. It worked good too as our two aces were available for the semi's and final's but the rain did not cooperate and another tournament was decided by Mother Nature. They gave us the bid to Disney but it didn't feel like we won it the way we wanted as there was another team ahead of us in the seeds but could not accept the Disney bid. They would have been declared the winner and not have even played us or the Bay Bombers that were just beginning their run through the brackets and I can promise would have been a force to be reckoned with if the rains did not come.
Any ideas out there on how to declare a champion in a rain cancelled tournament other than what is being used now. I believe the criteria this week was runs allowed with a +8 limit per game and thens runs scored but it seems different every time out. There has got to be a better way than what we experienced this weekend.
Come on guys, I know that there are a lot of smart baseball people on this site and that between us all we should be able to make some great suggestions for this subject. |

Posted - 05/08/2009 : 12:45:49 Speed, Power, Defense, Hitting, playing smart and many other things make baseball one of the most exciting sports in all of mankind's history. Papa agrees that speed is important, Power is nice to have in a clinch, defense wins games, and hitting for average and on base percentages are good and there is no doubt about any of the above. But what makes a good team is T-E-A-M and if you are looking for the secret of the Bandits it has just been given to you. These kids love playing with each other and will make any sacrifice that needs to be made for the team. If they need to put down a sacrifice bunt, they will and not pout about giving themselves up to move the runner. If they have to put themselves in jeopardy by crowding the plate to draw a walk when what they really want to do is hit away, they do it if it helps the team. Hit and run, squeeze, whatever you ask of them, for team they will do it. A lot of this is in the "Coaching" and a lot of it is that are first friends and then teammates. |

Posted - 05/08/2009 : 09:10:36 The game is more exciting when their is alot of speed. We hit 4 home runs in the tournament last weekend and we had 2 kids steal 10 bases in the tournament. From my stand point the stolen bases where alot more exciting. Watching a kid implement what you have taught them as far as stealing off of the pitcher. Anyway sorry to get off of subject alittle. #20 is a heck of a player and the few times I have seen him I have been very impressed. I have been very impressed with the Bandits every time I have seen them. |

Posted - 05/07/2009 : 08:09:40 Yea SPEED can really help move the runners around..But #20 has POWER..My son is quick and moves around the bases and covers the field fast lol...It helps when you have speed on the bases.. |

Papa, I don't think with that arm and that stick your #20 has much to worry about.

Posted - 05/04/2009 : 21:21:00 Baseballpapa do the Bandits have a website? I've been a fan since seeing them play at last years 9U SuperNIT and I am also originally from an area not too far from Boynton Park, but I live in and my son plays in Gwinnett county now. |
