Posted - 05/07/2009 : 16:43:10 Last week's rainout seems to be a blessing for Triple Crown. I guess they were owed one after the Spring Frost. Some good teams jumped into this one at the last minute. Predictions:
Pool A East Cobb Stallions 2-0 Braves Baseball 1-1 Alpharetta Athletics 0-2
Pool B East Cobb Combat 2-0 Bulldog Baseball 1-1 Sandy Plains Wildcats 0-2
Pool C 5-Tool Nationals 2-0 East Cobb Braves 1-1 Wills Park Warriors 0-2
Pool D Pro Spot Fitness 2-0 Hobgood Heat 1-1 Kennesaw Mustangs 0-2
Pool E Powder Springs Seminoles 2-0 East Cobb Shamrocks 1-1 Georgia Phenoms 0-2
Pool F East Cobb Longhorns 2-0 Southwest Express 1-1 Sandy Springs Longhorns 1-1 North Georgia Red Wings 0-2
All of the 2-0's and 1-1's go to the Gold Bracket. 0-2's to the Silver |

If you flipped the EC Braves and EC Shamrocks (From the Gold Division) with Prospot and SW Express (From the Silver Division) it would have been pretty close to how most would have drawn it up. (Braves played hard to get to where they were, and the Shamrocks got the fortune of having a 7-0 win with the Phenoms forfeit.)
The only way to have gotten around it would have been to have the divisions divided up ahead of time and seperated from the beginning.
Other than that, how is this different than any other year or tournament?
Allstar, as you said, there were some great games on Sunday. That is what pool play is supposed to set up, right?
I guess. It may be just me, but it seems like even in pool play their tournaments are usually more competitive than that one was on Friday and Saturday. Nobody's fault, teams got rained out and needed to play and that was the best option available. Definitely some folks got more than they bargained for, though. |

The nature of that tournament really changed last week when the deadline was extended and several strong Majors signed up after getting washed out of the previous weekend's tournament. It went from being about half and half Major/Triple A to being about 2/3 to 3/4 Major, and not your everyday Major teams, but some of the top ones. 13 of the 36 were decided by margins larger than Triple Crown's maximum run differential of 7, including the Silver Championship.
There was some great baseball on Sunday at ECB for sure.
Actually, 16 of the 36 games were decided by 7 runs or more. |

Posted - 05/11/2009 : 06:43:58 agreed alterego. that was just ugly baseball. Combat looks like a top 5 GA team right now. they are playing extremely well. Congrats to them. One team that I wondered about was Prospot. I see on the USSSA roster a few players are signed on N Gwinnett Bulldogs 13AAA. Wondering if they had turnover and how that affects them.
Congrats to Stallions and Warriors on a job well done. |

Posted - 05/10/2009 : 20:14:32 bigdog, EC Combat played Bulldog Baseball in pool play, arguably the toughest matchup of the tournament and Combat made it to the Championship and Bulldog Baseball made it to the Semi's.
Prospot and SW Express did not get a cushy draw, but it was not tough enough to give up 10 runs in one inning like both did, if memory serves me correctly. You can't blame that on the draw. |

Posted - 05/09/2009 : 23:42:55 I am sure Prospot and SW Express would have liked a draw that was similar to others ....getting at least 1 AAA team in pool play rather than having to play 2 majors. Certainly is tough on pitching. When you get a draw like the Stallions or Powder Springs had it makes pool play and setting up your pitching for elimination play much easier. |

Posted - 05/09/2009 : 22:57:18 I was going to pat myself on the back for the Combat pick over Bulldog, but then I'd have to answer for the Pro Spot picks too. Congrats to the Mustangs who are having a great tournament so far. I hope the weather will cooperate. Sunday looks like a lot of fun in that Gold Division. Expect some more suprises along the way! |

Posted - 05/09/2009 : 21:07:08 Well in typical GA Baseball fashion, thing did not quite turn out like they were scripted.
One, Prospot went 0-2 and get the 15 seed. Two, GA Phenoms would drop out and EC Shamrocks would get a 7-0 win and end up in the Gold Bracket. Three, Prospot would allow Hobgood Heat to come back from a 6-1 defecit in the 7th to win 11-6 and get the #3 seed. Fourth, EC Braves would end up with the #11 seed (last seed of the gold division), while the Braves Baseball Club would get the 12th seed (first seed in the silver division) Fifth, Prospot and SW Express would end up in the Silver Divison
Go figure. |

Posted - 05/08/2009 : 16:47:28 pitching is tough....especially in the 13u group. 2 hr time limits almost guarantee 7 inning games unless there is a blowout. So, pitching stategies of 2 innings here 2 there in pool play using 5-6 pitchers seem to be prevalent for the teams who arent deep in pitching. |

Posted - 05/08/2009 : 11:48:35 With Triple Crown, and only being able to throw 7 innings in the first 4 games (which is 2 pool games and two elimination games) using your pitching wisely is a must. You don't start adding innings until the Championship game (semi if you are 6-11) so the absolute most a player will be able to pitch is 9 innings. Most will only have 8, which is 3 less than you get with USSSA.
Good luck to the teams managing pitching. It takes good strategy. Especially with pool play seperating teams into the gold or silver divisions. |

Posted - 05/08/2009 : 11:14:55 Combat beating Bulldogs.....depends on who they pitch. If they want to throw an ace...then yes they could compete. If they dont...then they may lose again 15-1 which was the score last time they met in pool play.
Mustangs are due. But if the bats are silent it may not be close. |

Posted - 05/07/2009 : 23:34:32 Just felt Combat is on a roll after last week, and Bulldog is more vonerable in pool play due to recent defections. You were right about my math. I'm going to knock the Shamrocks down to Silver.
Also think the Hobgood vs Mustangs game is ripe for an upset. |
Alter-Ego |
Posted - 05/07/2009 : 22:47:02 I don't believe the GA Phenoms will go 0-2. I think their athleticism will get them passed the Shamrocks.
I am not sure I buy that the Wills Park Warriors will go 0-2 either. I guess it depends on who the Braves pitch in that game.
Regardless, it should be a good weekend of ball if the weather cooperates. |

All of the 2-0's and 1-1's go to the Gold Bracket. 0-2's to the Silver
All your bets seem pretty safe, but there are going to be 8 teams in the Silver, so at least 2 1-1's will be in there. Plus guarantee there will be at least one tie to make everybody's lives a little more interesting. |

Posted - 05/07/2009 : 18:16:01 Wow, 13u, I had nearly identical predictions other than Bulldog BB going 2-0 and Combat 1-1.
The only other difference is that all your 1-1 teams can't go to Gold...only taking 11 in gold & 8 in silver. Two 1-1 teams will be in the silver bracket. |
