Looking for a few tips, what to lookout for along the way. Should I take 205 up from the 88 and 80 over to Cooperstown OR 88 to 28 (Cooperstown Junction) up to Cooperstown? We will be driving into new york on Friday to get to our apartment before 4pm Friday afternoon.

Have never been and figured the closer we get to cooperstown, the crazier the traffic.

Thanks for any feedback / recommendations.

Thanks Cheese, and the rest of you battle-tested baseball guys...I'll do my best to stay outta the way, remain patient with my kids along the way, avoid the "fuzz" and nurture this experience for my kid. Where i was raised, we just didn't have opportunities like this. Too cool. I know we will be having a few "pops" while up there...all in fun, thanks for the tips.

Critical Mass - My experience of having driven back and forth from NY approximately 300 times -with kids and without, you really need to check into Airtran or delta and fly into Rochester, rent a car and take the thruway to cooperstown - they have 79 and 59 dollar fares now. Your sanity will be saved.

But.... if you like pain. West side of atlanta go up 75 to Knox and p/u 81 north to 88 then a left on 28 for about for about 15 or so miles, the park will be on your right a couple of miles before the actual Cooperstown. You are going to put high 900's on your odometer. From the east side of atlanta do the 12u coach thing go to charlotte, p/u 77 to 81. I hate the two lanes of 85, getting a ticket in that cruddy town before charlotte. If you go 75 you got three lanes out of the state and can haul the mail. Check the traffic for the construction around knoxville on 40 and the entrance to 81. Hauling the mail with short gas stops is going to run about 18 hrs on average. I have done it a lot less at night, no kids, a diet coke and a bag of pretzels. Give yourself a 4 to 6 hour window to make the check in time.

For all you cell phone users while driving - NY state has a law against it, and they WILL pull you over, take a cheap 3.99 ear and mic if need be.

NY state is a great place - it has the city and then the rest of the beautiful state. Where you are going is similar to North Georgia with the hills and farm land but it is 40 degrees warmer here - one of the reasons I moved. How many malls, chick-fila, houstons, starbucks will you see? Nada. Think like you are going to Jasper. ga for a week. Reminder, the McDonalds does not have the dollar menu like here unless they have changed it recently. When driving around on the small two lane roads, REALLY obey the speed limit signs. They do not have the Alpharetta Autobahn there. Yes you will see a bunch of dear too, they are really cute until your bumper meets them. Stay awake at the wheel. For those flip flop wearing people down here, I suggest you wear them only out of the shower. Take some sturdy footwear that is comfortable. This time of year it will be 40's and damp when you wake up then go up to the high 60's maybe break 70 then start going down again in the evening. Have your boys wear sleeves and a pull over in the morning and have them in the bag all day and into the night. They will love to sell you some sleeves if you forget and cannot get back to the barracks. This time of year brings some rain showers also so be prepared with an umbrella. They have some big tents to wait it out also. Points of interest - Sals is good- tell them how you want it and they will make it, see the old ball field and sit and feel what it would be like to play there in the old days, some good pubs in town too. When you go to the museum with your son, kinda be a fly on the wall, listen to the kids, point out a couple of cool things, but let them soak it up. There is too much to see for the hard core baseball fan to see with a team of little guys, go back later and soak it in by yourself, you will thank me and have a greater appreciation for this game we love.

Remember your kids will turn into little men on this trip, and believe it or not they can and will have to take care of themselves. They will hit you up for a burger or two, but it is all about baseball and their teammates for a week. Be there for them - when they as only - but let them have a blast and they will never forget it.

Try leaving a week early and barnstorming on the way up with all your players in a 15 passenger van...

There is NO traffic around Cooperstown as it is pretty much in the middle of no where.

When we went two years ago we went across 88 to 28. Our house was on 28 south from Dreams Park. Traffic is not so bad in C'town. We're going June 5-13 as well. We're stopping in NYC before to see Yankees v Rays @ the Stadium Friday night before we get to C'town Saturday morning.

Don't forget to visit Doubleday Field and Sal Pizza across from Doubleday on Main St. And of course Cooperstown Bat Company.

Stright up 81 to 88 to 28. Hagerstown MD is a good stopping point for a two day drive. GPS will be divided between 85 -> Charlotte -> 77 -> 81 or 75 -> 40 -> 81.

I would absolutly do a google search for each state's Department of Transportation and look to see where there is construction, there is always construction.

If you know someone with AAA have them get you a triptik (can be done on-line), it offers some insight as well.
