I have seen this topic before wanted to bring it up again. Why would coaches and parents feel good about themselves in using a trick play at the 9year old level? Sure its legal, but when parents and coaches are involved its pathetic. Happened in our game this past weekend-did not work. The opposing pitcher pretends to throw the ball into the outfield over second base on pick off. Players dive, etc...and PARENTS IN STANDS AND COACHES YELL GET THE BALL AND CREATE CHAOS, good news is it did not work as I had warned our boys about it. Better news is we hit a walk off grand slam in bottom of the inning to win the game. |

I have seen this play and the team do it also. The parent's are ABSOLUTELY involved. You know you are! I have been standing right there next to you when you did it. |

I have to disagree with you here, I saw the 9U 6-4-3 team use it last year several times and never once heard a parent yell a thing. Most didnt even know the play was on. I can't speak for this years 9U team however. I have seen this play work whether parents scream or not at all levels. Nothing wrong with the play just let the kids run the play alone. Hard part is communicating with runner on 2nd since he has no base coach standing right there. Players block vision of 1st and 3rd base coaches too which helps as well. |

What age is it acceptable?
Recently, two of Georgia's best 12U teams ended an extra inning game with that play. I've also seen it used with success at the high school level. (Just a little different play. 1st baseman jumped for late throw from 3rd to 1st on a single. Team in first base dugout faked like ball went in dug out. 1st baseman then tagged the runner as he started to advance to 2nd.)
I don't know if the parents were involved or not. It is the players that have to convincingly execute the play. I did kinda feel bad for that poor kid that got tagged out standing just off 2nd base when the play was used in the recent 12U game. On the flip side, I bet that kid has learned to watch his 3rd base coach.

There is always a fine line with trick plays but the problem I have with this one is that because of all yelling and screaming from the coaches and parents for the players to get the ball, the player can't hear the 1B or 3B coach and gets confused. I know because it happened to my team in the championship game of a tournament in a key situation and the kid got tagged out. The actual play itself is fine but the only way it works is if the coaches and parents selling it as well. |

Great results Louis. I am glad it worked out that way for you.
My suggestion is next time you prep your players, also prep the parents and have someone count 1, 2, 3 and on 3 all the parents yell "Bush League".
Embarrassment is a great deterrent. |

I think that is absolutely BUSH league for the parents to be involved in something like this. If their kids can't make the plays without their parents help then something is very wrong. JMO.
