Saw it last night in the Cubs game. Slow roller hit to first base side, 1st baseman fields the ball and attempts to tag the runner, misses! Runner began his path well inside the fair territory of first base line, when he avoided the tag he was still within the running lane to first base. Safe or out?

I agreed with the call, just looking for other opinions.

Cubs and Giants? The runner went from the left foot inside the runner's lane to outside the runner's lane. Dana Demuth had the correct call of runner out for leaving his base path.

Base line and base path are two different things and can not be used interchangeably.

It depends, and it's hard to say without seeing the play, but... The baseline is established by the runner when a tag play is imminent. If he strayed 3 feet from where established, moving from inside foul line to the running lane, then he should be called out. Normally, that's within arms reach of the fielder.
