Why are some high schools in cobb county paying 900 to 1400 for hs baseball. This makes no sense to me when other sports pay as little as 200.  |

It is an old thread i know but i felt i could relay and experience.
if you are from GA you never know its not the same everywhere..Granted part of the problem maybe state funding BUT
I showed a person recently 4 school web sites from 4 states i have lived in and the most any booster club every charged for a kid was about 150 bucks. One was in the triangle area of NC one in Maryland and one in Richmond and the last in Shen valley. Some had the family booster pass for 160 dollars.
Now i will admit the facilities in the schools in cobb, forsyth, fulton and other counties are much nicer. The other states may not have video scoreboards or indoor hitting or get new uniforms every year but the fundraising is at a minimum and the pressure to pay or raise money not like GA. So maybe you get what you pay for.
Anyone who tells you taxes are low in GA so we have to pay for school stuff is not looking at taxes in other states either. We are catching up in that area too LOL
Likewise travel ball does not cost nearly as much either as field space is not as expensive and teams do not carry 2 or 3 paid coaches.
Travel ball is this area is the best i have seen in any of the states and feel i would rather pay the cost for it than to pay the coast for high school. |

This reminds me of a line from a comedian on a cruise ship several years ago.

Look at the median income of the households attending each high school. You'll see a high correlation between the cost of any school activity (baseball, football, band, choir, ...) and the median income level.

OK I understand what everyone is saying here but what I don't understand is why do some schools pay over 1K and others in other counties pay 400. Anything over $500 and my son would not play baseball for his high school. We live in Cherokee and pay slightly under $500. |

Softball costs a fraction to maintain. Dirt infield, MUCH smaller grassed outfield area. Don't go through nearly the number of balls, etc. in a season. Wrestling piggybacks off the gym, so once they buy mats, pretty much finished, so not NEARLY as expensive to maintain.
Baseball has a ton of costs associated with field maintenance and upkeep. Cages, equipment, uniforms (wrestling has each wrestler buy their unitard and shoes and good to go). |

So I guess Softball and wrestling are bringing in the big bucks. Football is the only sport bringing in money and I am not even sure if high schools get gate fees? I have no idea, but all sports should cost the same IMHO.

Anybody who thinks playing competitive baseball on a great field in a well layed out facility should be free or $200 is on crack or your school/team must have an endowment (like McEachern) OR you Fundraise. Our field gets laser leveled every year, along with seeding and treatments throughout the fall. Our kids get "gifts" for reaching fundraising goals that are baseball team centric. The parents have to be involved and hustle a bit, volunteer for gates and concession duties in the summer & fall(PG Events) and but i think all those are pretty standard. We have one golf tournament a year and are asked to get 1 to 3 sponsors from local businesses to offset fees. We have our slackers and everybody knows who they are. At the end of the day, the ones who carry the load do it for the entire team. Oh yeah, and if you want to cut a check....cut the check and support your son. That's how we pay $300-500 and have a great baseball experience at one of the best HS venues in Cobb county. |

Wow, I don't feel as bad now. My kids play in Henry county and they charge $400. |

At our HS in Cobb we were told that the county pays for the lights, water, some dirt to start the season and the buses for away games. Everything else comes from the fundraising and "donations" parents make to join the booster club. I do not know how the money from ticket sales for different sports is used, but I'd love to see a break down. Cobb County has a policy that prohibits them from charging to play sports, but I would bet that the coaches know who isn't pulling their fair share for fundraising. It is not cheap to maintain a baseball field in the manner we expect it to be., and the booster club funds pay for the umpires, baseballs and all of the equipment, including all the uniforms and swag the boys get. They even pay to maintain the field including cutting the grass. |

Obvious answer would be baseball doesn'r bring in as much money as the 'other' sports. But who knows. Is the budget broken down showing what amount of money goes to what? How much fundraising is the team doing? |

Well in short....lots of people go to see Football games, and at $5 a ticket the school makes a pretty penny and they don't have to charge the players so much to maintain the fields.
How much does the school charge for baseball games? And how many do you actually see in the stands??? |
