Just curious how everyone uses courtesy runners for catchers and pitchers. Since the spirit of the rule is that it's to speed up the game (I think), can you only use it for the guy that is slated to catch or pitch the following inning? For example, if it's hot and you plan to swap out catchers occasionally, can you only swap the guy that started the game or the guy that will be catching in the next defensive inning?

All exactly right. The only exception I've seen is in scrimmages or other less formal games, especially if we were trying to beat weather. In those cases, it was a matter of courtesy between the coaches to allow us to warm up a pitcher or just speed up the game.

In official games it's exactly as the others have said.

Last batted out when you bat continuous/everyone. Subs runs when you aren't batting everyone. You can only run for the catcher from the previous inning, which I agree, doesn't speed up the game if you're making a change.

CaCO3Girl is correct. It needs to be the catcher/pitcher of record. Since the replacement catcher/pitcher has not taken over that position yet, you cannot get a runner.

At least that is how it worked for us. Your mileage may vary.

It's been our experience that you can only put in a runner for the catcher/pitcher that was JUST catching/pitching. The exception being the first inning, but the line up tells you who that will be.

Some leagues, at some age levels, also will only allow the runner to be the last batted out...something to watch for and clarify in your pre-game ump meeting.
