Posted - 08/28/2009 : 08:48:58 We use both the radar gun to measure bat-exit speed and the swing speed radar listed above to measure the bat speed as well. We sit it on a bucket across from the batter and dial up the pitching machine to a speed 5 - 10 mph higher than the pitch speed the player usually faces. We have found that when the player's "comfort level" is challenged, they tend to forget bat speed. By using the machine, it helps us refocus the player on the importance of bat speed, even when the pitcher is throwing hard. |

Posted - 08/26/2009 : 21:41:47 I would be less worried about measuring bat speed and more concered with ball-exit-speed. This is what many college programs measure.
I do this will all HS and youth players I train. On a regulation college field, the general MPH to achieve is 85 MPH. Generally, it is said that a player needs to hit a ball 85 MPH to get the ball out of the yard.
Ball-exit-speed is a better test. All you need is a accurate radar gun, tee, balls, and a 'slugger'. |

Posted - 08/25/2009 : 11:19:15 I think it's a little expensive, but you might want to take a look at Swing Speed Radar. It's portable and can be mounted on a tripod. http://www.batspeed.com/products06.html
