It's tryout season and I've seen some of the team tryout registration asks what organization the kid currently plays for. My question is, why does this matter? Does the coach call and get references from the organization the kid is playing for and ultimately leaving? Is it to look up stats on the kid? Just curious why this seems to be a required question for some teams.

In most cases I would say just to give them a more accurate idea of the boy's skill level/experience. Could work to your benefit bc we all know how you can have a great player who has a really crummy tryout and vice versa. But this should only apply to 13 and up. Under that anything can still happen and there should be no bias.

From what I've seen, Coaches and Orgs are lazy. They want already polished players so that there is little to no effort or coaching on their end. All to fuel the wins that draw more people for more money and empty promises. Prime example: people trying out for teams based on what the team did at Cooperstown on a 9u field and thinking it would translate to a 60/90 field where no legit HR's will be hit, 80mph pitch looks like 50, and 90ft will seem like a country mile.

I think this is completely dependent on the age group. Are we talking about a 8, 9, 10u kid jumping in to travel from rec for the first time or are we talking about a 14, 15u kid? For younger kids, there is still good talent in the rec programs and maybe the parents just didn't want to jump into the mess of travel that young. There are so many factors to consider to write off kids from a rec program because they didn't join travel ball at the first chance.

For the same reason you list where you went to college on a job application. Knowing the team they played on gives a coach a reasonable expectation of what type of coaching they have had and what level of competition they have seen.

Several reasons... are they coming from a polished program or a disaster of a mess? What level did they play at? Who did they play against? Who have they been coached by previously? What's the talent level of the kids they've been practicing with? How far were they traveling for their past team's practices? Is there anyone you know from that team you could speak to in confidence about the kid and the family?

I always like to know where kids have played before they show up for an evaluation. If you're a team looking to climb from say AAA to majors, you probably don't want to be evaluating a lot of rec kids. It's honestly a waste of the parents' time to bring kids out that you know aren't going to be successful jumping from rec ball to majors. The biggest thing is everyone just needs to be honest with one another during the process.

It will be quickly found out if your kid is not major level talent. Most major level kids can play up without an issue and still succeed. There are teams that develop kids to play major level. Very few of them left. Most people just want to win and will find themselves picking splinters on a winning team with little to no burn.

Some coaches say the tryout is for a major team and the team winds up being AA, and some parents may misrepresent their child's travel experience trying to get them on the best team possible. People still do this on their resumes...and wind up getting fired because they can't back up what they said they were. Better off being honest with yourself, the team, the other parents, the coach, or your kid to avoid an entire season of frustration or your kid riding the pine!

Honestly who knows?

Probably to see what level that team/org was, but I am sure if they know people/coaches on the previous team they likely will reach out etc.

Just depends on the coach and the org. At the end of the day I would't worry about it, if they want your kid they will take him, if not they will cut him and go somewhere where he is wanted.
