My son has an instructor teaching him to put his thumb on top of the bat instead of palm up palm down.he seems to be hitting the ball harder and swinging the bat faster.

Interestingly enough, I started noticing 1-2 kids at 14u doing thus last year. They can hit so well that I meant to ask somebody about it.

Please elsborate on hand position. Trying to picture it
I will bite on this. This board needs something to talk about for the next month.
I am assuming this is right handed. I am assuming you are talking about contact point. Have you filmed him and specifically looked at his hands now compared to before? What it seems you are describing is more of a tennis swing. This is a position that allows for better wrist twist for ball movement. In this position I would think that at contact a batter swinging a bat vs a racket would be in a weaker position not a stronger one. The position you describe is reached but preferred after contact to aid in slowing of the bat speed in a healthier wrist position.
Now this may all be a technique of words to achieve proper rollover after contact. This allows the body to slow the bat with less intensity at first and allows for higher bat speeds before, at, and through contact.
Here is my 2 cents worth, I do not claim to know anything about batting instruction, but I do know a little about golf. Your best golfers (those that hit the ball 300 yards plus) have a grip that essentially has both thumbs on top of the club at impact. This grip allows smoother wrist action while hitting through the ball. I wonder if the grip would also apply more power for baseball? I can see where if the right hand thumb is not on top (right hand batter) but behind the the bat handle, the wrists seem to impede one another at contact.
