Gwinnett Punishers Baseball is a having tryouts for our Fall 2016/Spring-Summer 201 10u Major/AAA tournament team located in the Gwinnett-Lawrenceville area.

This is a highly competitive/performance based fall, spring, and summer team. This is a not a “Social” team playing “Daddy Ball”. Tournaments are on weekends and practice twice a week, field and indoor with weekly scrimmages. Players will be playing multiple positions, must have great attitudes, highly athletic, good work ethic and not afraid to grind and hustle to become better. Real team culture.

Our goal is to provide superior player training to improve current playing skills and situational awareness. Creating true students of the game. Specialized training is available for all players (speed and agility, footwork, fielding, pitching, catching, throwing, and batting). Players will be challenged at the highest levels to push themselves to be better. Future of team is to become a showcase freshman/sophomore/junior/senior team that will play and display skills in view of college and professional scouts.

Players cannot turn 11 years old before May 1, 2017 to be eligible. Payment plans are available.

We have a flexible practice and training schedule with multiple team building events to include game footage days. Training is included. No extra or hidden costs to pay for training. No pay for play.

Professional level coaches that coached high school/college and played at D-1, MiLB, and Dominican League with a combined 15 years of coaching and playing experience. Head coach still trains and scouts current college and professional players. Outfielders are highly valued at this competition level.

We prefer to evaluate prospective players in live games if they are currently playing on another team. Tryouts are scrimmage play style to give true evaluation. Individual Tryouts are available as well.

Please contact us for tryout dates and times. We will add you to our list to inform you. Include parent name, player name, positions, travel experience, current age.

Weekend Tournaments that we play (Order of importance):

Triple Crown (Slugfest, State, Region, Summer Nationals, and World Series)
Grand Slam
Travel Ball Select (State and National)

We have a team contract that outlines how we do things and follow so that every parent of selected players is aware of our methods. We will not expose all of our methods here in order to keep others from copying them. If they were running their program the right way they would have posted it instead of trying to copy ours.

Q&A: (You will not get this detail from other coaches. They are looking for bodies)

Why Fall and Spring?
A. Baseball is a conditioning sport that requires a lot of instructional training to become a successful player. Although there are not as many teams in the Fall, we use the Fall play to establish and train players in game situations. Spring is when the competition comes to play and we will be more than ready for any team. Because of this we want to keep the same players from Fall to Spring. Players playing Fall sports are welcomed.

How many roster players?
A. There will be 11 or 12 players on roster. We want all to have as many at-bats as possible and be able to give attention to every player to advance his current batting skillset.

How many tournaments?
A. Expect to play 2 to 3 tournaments a month. Because of the travel involved and practice schedule we limit the tournaments we play per month.

What’s included?
A. 3 uniforms, 2 practice shirts, 2 hats, bag, helmets, field rental, and tournament costs. Gloves, Cleats, Bats and other equipment are optional depending upon team demand.

Why Major level?
A. In order to weed out playing daddy/buddy ball teams, we look for Major level tournaments and teams to play to challenge players. Although we do not control what level other teams claim to be, we will put in best effort to play competitive tournaments and teams. There may be tournaments we want to play in that only offer AAA level, hopefully the competition is stiff to challenge our boys. We may also play 11u teams to challenge players against senior competition.

How does the batting order work?
A. We use stats for our batting order. We look at batting average and on-base percentage per tournament to make the batting order for the next tournament. We expect players to become better hitters as we play more games.

How does the pitching work?
A. Pitching order is known before each game. There will be primary and backup pitchers assigned. Pitchers will be warmed up during batting in games to prevent injury. We train all players to be able to pitch with speed and control. We will not leave a pitcher on the mound that is struggling and giving away runs while everyone waits for him to figure it out. We have a 3 run rule for all pitchers in the game. Leaving a pitcher on in the game giving away runs kills the moral of the team and makes it difficult due to the big hole that is dug. We understand that pitchers will have bad games, but we just can not sacrifice the team while the pitcher is trying to work it out on the mound. The pros do not do it and neither will we.

How does positioning work?
A. Players will have primary and secondary positions, including pitching and catching. We rotate positions because we believe this method keeps the players engaged in the game while being able to play anywhere on the field. There are no fixed positions, but we will place the best players in the best positions when the game is on the line. Players are expected to be able to make plays in the positions they are assigned. If any player wants to try a different position we will make sure that player is trained-up and fundamentally sound to play that position in games.

Are there paid coaches?
A. Yes. A professional level coach will lead the team. Professional level training is included by actual baseball players not some wannabe dads watching MLB highlights on ESPN. Coaches attend and host coaching clinics to college and professional coaches. We even have a track coach that has competed D-1 level and professionally to ensure that our players get faster running bases with proper running techniques.

Does head coach have kids on team?
A. No. Head Coach is a paid coach with over 12 years experience.

Is this a “Daddy/Buddy Ball” team?
A. NO! You can easily tell Daddy/Buddy or Social teams by the level they play. A and AA teams are Daddy/Buddy/Social teams, 4+ dads = 4+ players means no room for your player no matter how good he is, they are not looking to be or play competitive. Loosing is their norm when attempting to play competition and rely on other players to make their weak kids look good. These teams exist because the dads want their kids to play an in-field position and tournaments want more money. They usually have a high turnover of players and become less of a team as the season is played, just look at the one line posts of them looking for players. Most are park-associated teams with volunteer dad coaches that need bodies to fill a team so their kid to play an infield position, not to mention the politics that go along with them. Just check the mid-season posts of them looking for 1 or 2 players and not stating what level they play at ie….A, AA, AAA, Major.

Is this an “Academy” team?
A. NO! We are not trying to fleece parents for money. We will not sell you the “development” or “process” code words. This is just baseball business code for “you are ignorant fools, give us your money, your kid and STFU”. Ours answers are direct and to the point. All funds go to the team and tournaments. Our sponsors cover at close to half of the costs. All parents pay the same amount, no pay for position play. Positions are earned.

Do we coach and play to win?
A. ABSOLUTELY!!!! It’s up to the kids to want to win and we push that culture. We do not know any other way. Parents are paying a lot of money for travel and results, not dads posting their own kids at 2nd base or shortstop who can not make routine plays and putting them at the top of the batting order who keep striking out. The fun is in winning and playing great baseball the proper way while establishing the work ethic base needed to carry on in the future. We refuse to waste parents time and money on slick talk and poor results. Fun is what others say who were never competitive athletes and think just showing up is enough.
