My 12 year old son typically uses a 30/20 composite bat. We have been asked to play in a wood bat tournament this coming weekend.
I would like to know how to determine which weight would be best for him using a wood bat.
My understanding is that wood bat weights are typically in the range of drop 3 to drop 6.
Please help! |

| as lite as you can get. I think I found an Ash -louisville slugger pro stock lite PLC 271 at better baseball which was a -7 or 7.5. May not be as durable but what good is it if they cant swing it? |

| Go look at the D-Bat brand bats at Better Baseball. They are large barrel bats that are around -8 to -9. They are specifically designed for youth in the 9 to 12 yr range. |

Agree with this posters comment about light as you can get. Played a 12U tourney with the Asto's last year and by the end of the tourney the big hitters were swinging my sons bat, a 27-19 Rawlings Big Stick 242J 27 inch which weighed out to be a drop 8. Looks like a toothpick compared to the aluminum or composite bats the boys regularly use, but has held up through 3 wood bat tourneys. The big boys laughed at him at the beginning of the tourney, but by the end of the tourney they were borrowing it...
big issue with wood bat tourneys is that if the boys stay with their regular length, because of the additional weight, they struggle with bat speed.
You also need to teach the boys to hold these wood bats properly or you will bust them by the dozen over a tourney. They need to hold the bat with label up or down so that when they make contact with the ball, they use the natural strength of the wood grain. Think about it as a two by four. One way it is easy to break, the other way it is like five times as hard. The boys are not used to worrying about this and it takes some practice. I suggest swinging with wood bats at practice or two prior to the tourney so you can get them used to this. Balls are just not going to go as far. Think about your bunting opportunities in a wood bat tourney. |

Better Baseball has a bat scale you can weight each bat with, so you can find specifially what you want. Two bats of the same make and model will weigh slightly different. They have a couple cages that have batting tee's and soft foam balls in them to take some test swings with. Make sure you find one that does not look like it is swinging the batter.
If any of the sponsors here on the website has a bat scale, please let us know so we can support you as well. If you don't, you might want to consider investing in one. It is a cheap investment and really makes a bat purchaser happy knowing what weight they are truly buying. Metal bats are the same way. They will weigh differently as well. |

You all have been a huge help! We went to better bats for this weekend, since this was a last minute topic, and my wife bought two bats. We are definitely going to check out Carolina Clubs for future tournaments.

We have wood bats at Elite Sports and the UPS store has a scale that I weigh all the bats on.
The light tournament bats we carry are the Louisville Slugger pro-lite that is approx drop 5 and the Rawlings Adirondack that is approx a drop 8.

Full retail in my store is $39.95, I offer at least 10% of bats gloves etc to NWGA Bloggers, for these I will offer $30 to anyone who mentions this the NWBA site.
You can call 678-903-0024 to check if we have your size and if you want to take several and weigh them at the UPS store you can of course do that to get the exact lightest one. **This bat usually comes up close to -8

Hi, sorry for not checking back. The Louisville Pro-lite is I think $55 retail, I would sell for $45 to NWBA bloggers. This bat typically weighs out at around -5. I have not weighed them all but that has been typical.
The $30 bat is the Rawlings one I was asked about above. It is approx -8.
