I need some advice. What do your boys eat between the games on tournament days? Last year our coach was kind of strict about this, but it didn't work so well. This year will be different. Do you bring them something, feed them at concessions there or go out somewhere? Do you eat together as a team or does everyone go their own way? I'm in a position to make recommendations to the team and would appreciate hearing what works best for you. |

My sons teams generally leave the park if there is a long enough break to do so. I usually recommend something light such as a sandwich, salad, fruit and lots of water of powerade. We had one coach in the past who didn't want any player to eat red meat between games because of the slow digestion time and most players followed that rule, but I am not sure it actually made a difference. I usually try to keep the kids from loading up on carbonated drinks and candy. |

We are all over the place with this one.......... If there is time, a large group of us try to eat as a team, even if the coaches stay at the field they usually send their kid with that group to eat. Of coarse all are invited/informed so that no one feels left out. Our group this year loves Subway so that makes it casual, inexpensive, healthy and the boys can sit apart and goof off. If you have a lot of time and $, the boys love Hooters just for the wings I'm sure.... If not a lot of time then its the concession with one or two of the more organized moms having brought lunch for their families. On Sundays many of us also bring bananas and other fruits for team snacking between what we hope is back to back to back games. :-) |

We picnic. It allows more time to relax, my son can eat a more balanced lunch, and we can usually squeeze in a game or two. Some time a wiffle ball game, sometimes cards or bannagrams. |

I don't know about the rest of you but going to the tournaments every weekend with my son and possibly his sisters can cost a small fortune! After paying the gate fee for 3, around $20, then something to eat & drink for 3 kids and 1 adult--about $30. Then everyone will want some kind of snack or candy another $10. Now everyone is thristy again because it's very hot out, $10. If your there most of the day you can count on another meal because everyone is hungry again, $30. By the time you leave the park you've been nichel and dimed for about $100. That turns out to be $200 a weekend or $800 a month. This doesn't include the gas to drive to the tournament every weekend day. We play ball every weekend for 4.5 months straight.
Over a year ago I wised up and starting packing so good the consession stand had nothing on me. In fact other parents and kids wanted to get food, snacks and drinks from me....lol We shop at Costco so I always have plenty of food, snacks and drinks. Now I don't spend a dime when I'm at the park except if there charging a gate fee. |

I am not a Baseball Mom, but I am curious as to what you Mom's think of this idea. I actually had a couple of my 11U players ask to go to Hooters between games and I shot them down. I figured that I would have a mutiny from the Moms if I took them to Hooters. I, personally, love to go to Hooters but NOT for the wings (hehehe) but for the kids I think there are better alternatives. What are your feelings? If not for 11U, what age would be appropriate? I am not asking because I am considering it...just consider it research ;)

Coach Tony: Tee hee...
This topic just came up this week. Our coach wants to take the boys (13U) to Hooters and I personally don't have a problem with it. I'm afraid a couple parents MIGHT, but it's not my call.
Whatever they have to do so that they all bond and trust each other works for me... I just don't want them PLAYING like they are the Bad News Bears!!!
Let them go mark their territory. It's harmless for them, but we may need to keep our eye on you!!! |

Tony- This mom doesnt have any issues with Hooters- 12u- Like rippit says a little harmless fun.. We do usually save it for after games done for the day....may be a little too distracting for between games. |

The Hooters topic raises it's head frequently here. An extensive post on nwga from last year about 10u can be found here http://www.nwgabaseball.org/snitz/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=9522.
For what it's worth, my thoughts are this. There tends to be two differing opinions on this. On one side are the folks that really don't care. The other are those that feel strongly against it and view it as innapropriate. In the end, it can serve as a devisive topic amongst a team that really doesn't help the boys or team play ball any better. With enough other dining options, pick a different restaurant and leave the morality parenting to the parents. Those that want to gather their sons and go to Hooters on their own outside of a baseball tournament are free to do so and those who don't want to participate can choose not to. That way you don't pull the "team" into the fold of the discussion. Enough drama in the travel ball world to leave out those things that aren't really important. |

Most of the time, we pack quite a bit of food for our kids. Sometimes I may get my son something from the concession stand, but mostly we bring a ton of food to eat. It doesn't cost as much and we get to see other teams play between our games. |

For a quick snack energy mix by planters is great! I also keep beef jerky and clemintines in my bag! |
