My son has gotten a late start playing team sports, so this past Spring was his first year playing baseball. We have been doing private batting lessons with him as well as working with him playing 2nd base mostly, with some outfield positions (which he obviously played most of his rookie season). He was the most improved player on his team, and most of his teammates did not know that he had never played ball before that season.
He wants to tryout for travel baseball, and I know next to nothing about it other than what I have been able to find on forums. I understand there is a significant time and financial commitment, and we are prepared for both.
What I am hoping to find some information about is how difficult is it for us to find a team for him to play with? Is it so competitive to play travel ball that he will find difficulty making a team? Should we be working with him on other positions as well? Should he be attending tryouts for multiple teams in the area? How would we go about figuring out which teams he might have a better chance of playing with? Our goal is to have him play more competitive ball than what the rec league provides with their mandatory play time for each player. We found last season that due to number of players, my son did not get much needed coaching, and often the team suffered due to some players not being committed to attend the games or practices. They lost many games due to the rec rules for playtime for all players preventing us from putting forward the best player for the situation.
Any feedback would be appreciated, thank you. |
