I am curious as to what teams will be doing this year differently because of the state of the economy?

1. Is it affecting your parents (I know of a few teams where some players parents are no longer employed)?
2. Will it affect the number of out of state tournaments?
3. What about National Championships to end the year?
4. More DH’s and less tournaments, or trying to find less costly tournaments?
5. Or, do you have a few team sponsors and you will travel where you want, when you want without thought?

No new bat bags, no new helmets, two good quality two button tops without tackle twill, 4 local tournaments (plus league tournament) and other cost savings.

I think you will see teams be more selective on their out of town tournaments. I don't think you will see as many teams say "Hey, let's go over and play in Auburn this weekend." without the tournament being strong or a SUPER NIT or something like that.

At least gas has dropped below $2 a gallon. Some speculations are it will drop another $.30 in the coming months.

I do see myself rethinking my "Driving vs Flying" rule. Before I had a "Anything over 6 hours drive I will just fly" rule, but now I have had to expand that out to 10 hours driving.

The economy was messing with us a year ago as we had a couple of families of players that we had selected just not able to swing the $$$. We have about the same budget as last year and haven't gotten any push back as yet.

I don't know if any of our team's families are having employment, or unemployment, issues, but 1/14 is 7% so chances are pretty good that they are.

Don't mean to bring tidings of doom and gloom, but this is potentially beyond whether one drives or flies to a youth baseball tournament. My guess is we're going to see even elite teams reducing travel and thus better tourney fields the next couple seasons throughout the greater Atlanta area. Teams that count on sponsorship and such may see reduced dollars. Reality is we're looking at cutbacks in the workplace, if we haven't felt the sting yet locally, with reduced income and in some cases job losses. We all love the game, but we may now think twice before heading up to Knoxville or over to Birmingham - filling the gas tank twice, a couple nights in a motel, eating two and three meals a day out, tourney entry and gate fees.

This ultimately may not be all bad. Folks aren't afraid to talk up the quality of baseball in these parts. If that's the case, there should be no shortage of competition in sticking closer to home.

Now that is it closer to tournament time, are we seeing less teams sign for tournaments due to the economy?

If you give this a lot of thought you will see as I do that with the
quality of teams this area offers that it is not necessary to travel very far to play the best. Out of all our 9U games last year in 5 states the toughest were generally the ones nearest home. I hope the reaction is that there will be more top quality tournaments in our local area. If you look the early tournaments are doing really well with many of the top names entered and some already full.

I see more Atlanta metro teams entering more local tourneys. I'm also seeing metro teams pushing their hosted tourneys harder than ever before to raise funds.

The team my son is on is playing one less out of town tournament and spent about 10% less on uniforms than the last two years. More tweaking than flat out changing the approach.
