Looks like great baseball weather for this weekend in North Georgia!! Maybe we should start scheduling tourneys in January next season(he said sarcastically). Going to be very chilly in the day, and once that sun goes down, it will be really cold. Saturday and Sunday mornings in the 20's. WHY are the kids subjected to this?? The kids aren't the ones who organize and schedule these tournaments this early. The coaches and parents just can't wait until warmer weather arrives.
This would be a good time of year to schedule a double header or 3 team round robin and if the weather is good , you play. At least you can schedule the games in the afternoon at the warmest part of the day. If the weather is not good, cancel the games. But when participating in a tournament, you have put up around $400 or so and you feel like you want to get your monies worth, so you play the games and have the kids play in ridiculous weather conditions. I agree, why not wait another month or so, let basketball completely finish, start indoor workouts and some outdoor stuff if weather is good, then start your first tournaments at the end of March. Still gives you plenty of baseball. |

I have always been amazed at how much baseball we play in Feb and early March and how little we play in July... |

W, Its all about the cold hard cash. Many of these early season tournaments are scheduled because the promoters lose access to field space once rec baseball begins. Then after school is out all the teams are headed to the big tourny's out of town. So the only window they have in now. |

GW: I agree to some extent. If you really must play in February, I suggest going South to McDonough, Peachtree City, La Grange, Macon, ect. instead of North to Dalton, Dawsonville, Canton, ect.. 7 degree difference. 52 versus 45. |

I remember playing last February. The temp was 34 degrees and snowing. The kids ended up playing with thier jackets on on the field. Not a fun weekend. |

GW your right on the money with this one. Why the need for everybody to be done around july 4th. Just start later by just a couple of weeks would make a big difference and play a couple of weeks later. Summer time is really baseball season anyway. |

I can't say I disagree. I also would be lying if I said that after a couple of months of winter, both my son and I ( and my wife ) are excited about the new season starting. Just curious, there are six replies to this post ahead of me. How many of you six have sons in a tournament before the end of Feb.? |

To give the football players a month off. Families a month with no sports.
Plus July 5 is when the 'crootin' starts for 2010.
OK, the second one is a joke.
Sort of. |

its because football starts so darned early, and families need a break in between. Football in August is as crazy as baseball in February.

And what makes you think you wont have parents say "Why does baseball have to run all summer long, we don't even get to go on vacation with our family.." You know starting March First and ending July 4th weekend does give you 18 weeks of baseball..I would think you would have plenty of weekend to play..oh yeah thats right, I forgot about the parents who need both weekends around Spring Break for their vacation, Memorial Day weekend, July 4th, throw in Flag Day, St Patricks Day, Mardi Gras, Cinqo Di Mayo, Easter, No Sunday Ball, Sister's birthday, Brothers Birthday, Siblings Graduation, Mothers Day, Fathers Day, Grandmothers Day, My third cousin on my Fathers 2nd uncle's side get out of jail day...and I'm surprise anyone plays in more than 2 tournaments a year... |

The weather for last year's Spring Frost was spectacular. The Forsyth Slugfest the next weekend got frozen/snowed out. After that happened we jumped in a tournament in Ellijay the next weekend that was rain-shortened. I was tempted to start later this year, so we are starting the first weekend of March. We want to get 60-70 games in without having to play all summer. |

If a tournament has the word "frost," "freeze," "frozen," "ice," "chill," "cold," "thaw," "February," "pre-season," "warm-up," "hand-warmer," or even "first" it might as well have the word "miserable" in it too. I wait 'til late March at the earliest for our first tournament. |

All of this could be fixed if the schools wouldn't start so ridiculously early.
I just don't get the seemingly immovable object that is a school start date before the ides of August.
Cobb County voters send school board members into office with the express promise to back off the date and, once in office, they act like they never heard of the issue.
Where's my guillotine?

I agree school starts way to early and ends to early also. I wish they would go back to the way it used to be when I was a kid. Summer is so short a high school kid can hardly work a summer job with the short summer these kids get nowadays. |

I have to agree with the football thing starting too soon...August is crazier for football than Feb is for baseball....I hate cold weather but we love baseball more....so often we drive to Macon, Tifton, or farther early in the year....we already played one tourney this year and it was about 65 degrees in South Georgia...and a very easy drive so we played some ball....but NG is very unpredictable in the early months. Anybody remember the blizzard of 93? MAny of the kids were on Spring Break... |
