Brackets are out. Several very good Georgia teams are in this one.

national ranked Arkansas Seminoles
Stixx Baseball
Georgia Grip
HP Chili Dogs Black
Kennesaw Express
10AA state champs Georgia Force

Should be a good tournament.

Anyone have any opinions on this one?

Anyone can enter the tournament you do not need to qualify

How did Grand Slam do? Quality of park/fields? Umpiring?

We played in Session I and here are my comments for what they're worth:

Organization - I thought Grand Slam was as organized as any that I've experienced. The coach's meeting was on time and succinct (and well catered which was nice). The game times and scores were posted promptly. They also handled the rain delays easily.

Fields - The fields were okay. They are adult slow-pitch softball fields so the infield dirt goes deep into the outfield. Also, the infield is more sandy that I am used to and the area around first when leading off was a bit deep which led to slow starts.

The fence was a temporary fence that stopped short of the Foul Line by about 4 feet on each side and no foul pole (or fair pole as some call it). It didn't make a difference in play but just didn't look right. The temporary fence the first two days had a LOT of holes in it due to dry rot. I'm sure GS wasn't happy about this and they were replaced before bracket play began.

Umpires - Most were good. As usual some strange strike zones. We had one umpire in pool play who refused to call a balk telling me, "I'm not going to call a balk on a 10 YO and you can tell the Director I said that." The pitcher never came set, started every pitch with his ball and hand in his glove, and twitched a lot. He balked about 3 times on every pitch which made it hard for my players to know when he was actually going to the plate.

I had a discussion with the umpire director about this and that umpire wasn't around for the rest of the tournament. Grand Slam had the umpire director on site which was a huge plus and well done.

Overall, this is a well run tournament and Grand Slam does a nice job. And PCB is a great destination for a week trip with a team. Lots to do down there. But it's also hard to keep your team focused so if you're looking for a serious tournament that is all about baseball, you might look somewhere else.

Overall, I think they did a very good job. This time of year presents some weather challenges and they handled them very well. The were even considerate of plans that some teams had as a team when they rescheduled games. The umpires were pretty good. Of course some of their strike zones were a little questionable, but that happens everywhere. The park was very nice and the fields were dragged and lined pretty often.

Jim and Joey: Great job. It is amazing what hanging around Papa for a few weeks can do for you. Just kidding and all should realize that things like winning this kind of championship does not just happen by chance or destiny. It is a result of committment, courage and dedication by both these young kids and great men that find joy in being with and sharing their knowledge of this great game of baseball. Thank your kids and we all thank you for helping to allow others to know that Georgia has a pretty good reputation for producing many quality teams. Great job Grip.

The Georgia Grip were crowned champions of the Grand Slam World Series Session II. They reached the end of the winners bracket undefeated by beating the nationally ranked Arkansas Seminoles 6 to 4. The Seminoles then climbed their way back to the championship game and handed the Grip their first loss of the tournament 9 to 0. The Grip then rebounded in the rubber match beating the Seminoles 9 to 0 to take the championship. All in all, this was a very well run tournament and a lot of fun.

Kennesaw played well but had the cards stacked against them from the beginning and the wear and tear finally got to them.

The Stixx team out of Albany looked like a shell of what they used to be, leaving the tournament with only one win in 4 games.

The Georgia Force and Tifton Thunder proved to be worthy opponents for anyone in this age group.

Papa, you are right on target here. The boys played well today but we have a tough opponent in the Georgia Force tomorrow. We will give them our best shot and see if we can advance to the next game against the Arkansas Seminoles. The Seminoles beat Kennesaw today 4 to 0. Kennesaw must have done something to make the Grand Slam people mad. They have had the toughest draw I can imagine through this tournament. I still think they are the team to beat but they have a tough task ahead of them now. I'm confident they will be there in the end.

Keep your phone handy tomorrow. I may need you to consult with Batman or the Penguin for me.

The Grip put the squeeze on the Jacksonville Jackets today. Go Grip!

jc1964: For the record I don't recognize any of the girls name but as you know Papa is in the first stages of Alzeimers. But it sure has been fun trying to remember and put faces to the names you mentioned. I can't believe I said faces but you know my wife reads these post too so I must be tactful.

I have been following the brackets and I think that the upset of the Stixx would be good for the Grip. Remember my #1 tip and save your Studs and try not to throw any Duds. #2 tip is that you must not take any top notch pitching home with you. Do what you must to advance as you are positioned nicely in this one. Let the bottom half knock each other off while you take care of business in the top half of the bracket.

I would have to be put on the Grip payroll for tips #3 and #4 but they would be well worth the cost.

Day one of bracket play winds down with the Stixx team going down to Jacksonville in a surprise upset. The game was played early and it looked like the Stixx players just didn't wake up in time. I'm sure they will be ready for the next game and it will be a tough one as the Stixx will play the loser of the Kennesaw Express/Arkansas Seminoles game.

The Georgia Titans had the Tift County team down 10 to 1 at one point in their game but ended up losing 12 to 10. Maybe Titan1 can give us some info as to what happened. I didn't get to see this one.

Papa: Christy, Brandy, Summer, Tara and Dawn from Hooters said to tell you "Hey" and give you a big kiss for them. I'm willing to pass along the "Hey" part but I'm not going to be kissing you anytime soon. I like you a lot but that's taking it too far !!

Papa is so proud of his boys. They are chips off the old block and appear to really be learning about this great game of baseball and I mean on and off the field. Good job guys.

Be sure and remind them if any of the girls act like they know Papa that they have must have me mixed up without another older gentleman that looks like Papa.

I think our ATL area teams will come back home w/ stories about some of the South Georgia players/teams they encountered down there.

I saw where Tift Count Thunder knocked off HP Chilidogs Black today. I'll bet these Southern GA teams muster up a few more "upsets" before this one's done.

Lee County, Tift County Thunder, Georgia Force, ect.. just because we have not seen them, doesn't mean they can't play some ball.

Add them to all the talent we already knew Georgia has, and that makes the Peach State even stronger than we thought.

The game of the tournament so far had to be the Kennesaw Express vs Stixx yesterday. Both teams started their best pitchers and when I left it was 2 to 1 in favor of the Express. Express ended up winning 5 to 2.

Express plays the Arkansas Seminoles tonight at 8:30 and this should be a good one too.

Papa, we have already implemented so much of what we have learned from you. Last night for example, we took the boys to Hooters - the one right on the beach - and they were all getting kisses from the waitresses and learning how to sling the order tickets to the cooks. I know Papa would have been proud of them.

Thanks momof12. We sure wish #12 could have made the trip with us. We have a couple of days at the beach before we play again. Hopefully we have played well enough to get the #1 seed and a bye in the first round. Say hi to everyone for us.

10u update: GA Grip defeats Georgia Force 8 to 1 in the 8am game. Jacksonville Yellow Jackets and Lee County were tied 2-2 when rain forced a delay.

Session II starts tomorrow so their shouldn't be any scores. Sunday is a rain make-up day only.

I haven't had the same experience as bmoser with slow posting of scores on Grand Slam. My experience with Grand Slam has been mostly positive all the way around and PCB is a great place to end the season. I recommend these events to everyone.

Should be a good tournament this week.
