I would say have at least 8 pitchers that can throw strikes(walks kill and make the hitters beat u), have 2 solid catchers and build around a defense. Hitting comes with time and repetitions.

Any predictions for the 2 tournaments this weekend? Looks like the tournaments are equally split for some good games to watch for...

The Southeastern NIT is clearly the stronger tournament. I'm gonna go with Acworth, Yard Dogs, ATL Angels, and Gamers in semi's with Acworth winning the championship.

I'm very curious about the Fusion team as well as the Jackhammers.

Should be interesting to see how it plays out. There are so many unkowns this early in the season, I believe most anyone in the field could win...on any given day! It will be fun to see what happens!

Wow was I wrong this past weekend! Looks like after 4 tournaments nothing as been consistent, is the Super going help or do you think its just going to be that year that there will be a lot of questions? After this weekend who the top teams now?

Moving into the second quarter of the season it looks like we are starting to see some consistency with a top 5 except this past weekend maybe due to Spring Break. I still say that we need to play a lot more of the tournaments on proper sized fields. Looks like April 13-15th Triple Crown tournament will be a good event and maybe we will see real baseball on 180-200 fields. This past weekend in Acworth it was good to see outfielders have to truly play the position, hitters get rewarded for true gap hits and baserunners getting to play JMO... For some reason only a few teams get it!

JMO again, I'll say until we start seeing everyone play on the right field sizes I say the Top teams for now are below and everyone else is even. I'm sure some will agree and some won't but thats why its a discussion board.

GA Yarddogs (like to see them play on bigger fields)
Acworth
643
then the next 10 teams are even

Looks like the East Cobb Mets may be coming around. Went 4-1 this past weekend at a tournament in Acworth. Beat 643 and Georgia Jackhammers, lost to Acworth in championship.

Looks like the Top 10 should be clearer after this weekends tournament. Finally looks like all the top 8u teams are playing with some new teams as well on proper field sizes... 180' right and center field with a big left field wall that makes 200'. JMO this is the best tournament so far, better than the Super because of the fields.

No more arguements about pop up homers, mostly all tough teams so piching is huge (Triple Crown rules) and outfeilders can play the position. As we saw at the Acworth tournament some teams struggled with the bigger fields.

?? they have become a mystery! Can't answer because this tournament is in their backyard and this tournament is solid but looks like they are playing in a lower ranked 9u tournament instead.

My question would be where is Xpress Bulldogs and Dacula since people have mention them as a contenders. I know TC could only take 18 teams but still could wish. Maybe they are just playing for points.

Maybe I'm just excited about seeing all the top teams playing on proper feild sizes to actually enjoy almost real beasball. We are going to see teams really play all pitchers, outfeilders really having to play the poisitions, infeilders working the lanes for cutoffs, hitters being rewarded for a solid line drives thru a gap and base runners staying aggressive.

Any Predictions? Pool play looks tuff, I will say that all games will be close and some New teams will jump up the rankings.

8U cherokee reds i am hearing is going 9u the rest of the year. Doesn't make a lot of sense. Not really sure what their long term goals regarding that is. Atlanta Angels last year went mainly 9U and then had to go play 8U tourneys to get enough points to play in the 8U World Series.

Another subpar tournament. At Barnett Park tonight for 8U games the mound was at 46 feet. Not even a rubber on the mound at 40 feet. Coaches had to dig the rubber up and dig holes to place it at proper distance. Delayed start of first game by nearly 30 minutes.
Another tournament where umpires don't know rules. Umpire tonight called an infield fly rule, there is no infield fly in 8U. And, only one umpire.
Why can't the tournament directors get with the umpire crew before the tournament and go over ground rules? Pathetic.

Following up on water boy. At Sprayberry yesterday the mound was placed wrong, we had to put out the bases, we had to drag the field, and we had to line the field. We should definately have two umps, but he did a great job by himself. No restrooms and no concession stand WOW. We pay a lot of money for these tournaments so to have to prep the field is inexcusable. Someone drop the ball big time yesterday.

I agree 100%. This was another example of a money making machine (Triple crown) putting on a terrible tournament at the expense of the kids in an effort to fill their pockets!

1. 9:30 start time for 8u...Really? Tournament director must not have kids. Do you realize that the average 8 year old goes to be between 8-9pm. Most of the kids had their eyes open, but looked like the walking dead out there.

2. Only one umpire that clearly didn't know the rules and had a strike zone the size of a pie plate. Seems like if you're hiring an umpire, you would make sure that he knows the rules. let's see, 18 pool play games @ $50.00 per ump = $900.00 saved...or should I say MADE!

3. Games held at a park where there are no restroom and no concessions. while i didn't witness this, if it's true, that's really pathetic. How much did teams pay to play in this tournament???

4. The whole layout of the tourney just sucks in my opinion. You got teams waiting in limbo, dressed and standing at the front door wondering when and where they're going. And with possibly only a possibly only an hour to get where they're going! Did you really need to play six bracket games on Saturday night???

Common sense isn't so common anymore!

I agree about the issues above for the Premium money we are paying, we as the customers and should not have to prep the fields. I don't mind doing it if I knew in advance to get there a little earlier. Other than the fields and concessions I thought it was a good tournament competative wise! It was good to finally see some REAL 8u baseball on proper field sizes! A lot of doubles and triples, good cut off work and great base running! With a few issues with the parks for the fans (because the boys know how to find a tree) over all good Baseball tournament to me if you like watching the game!

Congrats to the Champions of both divisions! Saw some good games this weekend and saw some teams show there true colors! After this weekend below is just my opinion for the Top 10 in 8u with a clear Top 4, 5-15 can change any weekend...

8u Yarddogs (Great Hitting, good base running)
Acworth (Deep pitching, Solid defense, good base running)
643 (Solid Defense, Good hitting)
Gamers (Good hiiting, good infield defense, 2-3 good pichers, hot and cold)

Jackhamers (Scrappy team, good hitting, couple of pitchers, hot and cold)
Propects (matters which roster they bring to the tournament, good hitting)
NC Angels (Scrappy team, never gives up)
HomePlate (hot and cold, 2-3 good pitchers, good hitting)
ECB Stallions (biggest mystery, hot and cold team)
Atl Angels (scrappy team, hot and cold, never gives up)

Mill Creek, Mets, Xpress Bulldogs, Hawks, Sluggers all even

Cherokee Reds is a Top 6-10 team but they decided to play AA 9u, probably not play anymore 8u this year. I believe 6 of the top 10 teams could win 9u tournaments right now.

You know what is interesting, Those kids who are playing 9U as 8 year olds could be in high demand next year. Should be interesting when "silly season" comes around in the summer time when everyone is trying to better their teams.

Was excited to be able to bring the Sandlot Sluggers to Marietta to to play in our first Triple Crown tournament. It is tough on us being the only 8u Kid Pitch team south of Atlanta. Our home park this year seems to be an hour away. With that being said I wanted to give some feedback from this weekends tournament.

THE GOOD
-Very competitive tournament. There were some very good pool play games that came down to the wire. Do not know how Triple Crown picks pool play but I thought it made for some very exciting pool games. From the Sluggers standpoint it was good for us to play tough competition in pool play. (Not a good draw in bracket play though "Yard Dogs")
-Playing fields were very nice for the most part. Propper field sizes allowed teams to utilize the fundamentals that they have learned (baserunning, cut-offs, etc...)

THE BAD
-Portapotties at Barnett Park, unaceptable... But at least they were there for emergencies.
-Sprayberry High School-First time at a ball park where there was not a rest room within a half mile of the field. Not only that, there was no concession stand. Over all I guess not that big of deal if my expectations for a Triple Crown event wasnt so high going in.

THE UGLY
-One Umpire for pool play. No excuse for this. If a team travels over 2 hours and pays a $320 entry fee, I wouldnt think it would be to much to ask for two umpires to be available for pool games. We could have left base early every time and there is no way the umpire could justify seeing them leave early. I guess it was more about the $ than doing what was right.

-The most discouraging thing about this tournamnet was sitting at the hotel at 5:00 waiting to find out if/where/when/who we would be playing. We ended up having a 6:00 game at sprayberry which was 15 minutes away.

Over all not a bad tournament, maybe my expectations for triple crown were unrealistic. Will probably be coming back for the state tourney in June.

As for the Top teams...

1. Yard Dogs (Boy can they hit and run bases, nuff said)
2/3. Acworth Warriors (Verry fundamental baseball team)
2/3. 6-4-3 (Havnt played them but have seen them play a few times)

4-10 (no particular order)
MGBX Bulldogs
NC Angels
GA Jackhammers
Atlanta Prospects
Home Plate Chilidogs
Atlanta Angels
Cherekee Reds (Havnt seen them play)

It was great to see and play some very good 8u teams. I thought each teams players, coaches, and parents represented themselves well.

I see more 8u teams following the Cherokee Reds and starting to jump into some 9u AA tournaments. Maybe the team did have a plan after all!!! If you haven't seen any AA tournaments, don't believe these are awful teams just because they aren't AAA. You will be very surprised. And to think the top 6 could just jump into it and win a tournament?!?!?! There are good teams and some bad teams... You are still playing 8 year olds vs 9 year olds. The difference in size and strength make a huge difference, especially in hitting and pitching. Your 8 year olds throwing heat at 40 feet arent so fast at 46 feet. For some of the teams, it's like taking batting practice, so you're outfield better know how to run back on balls and play better defense.

Once the 8 year olds get to finally lead off, steal bases at will, and even swipe home, good luck on getting them back into a 8u tournament.

Looks like another strong tournament this weekend! Is it all that bad that on Wednesday morning I'm already looking foward to the weekend so I can watch these boys compete? See everyone at the lake

Where is everyone else? Have they all decide to start playing 9u? I understand the arguement above and Im hoping we decide to play one or two 9u tournaments in May before all the State Finals and WS.
