Coaches advertise their looking for MAJOR players for their MAJOR team, parents want their kids on a MAJOR team, parents swear their kid is a MAJOR player!! Many of the teams, and most of the parents are incorrect in their perception of being included in the MAJOR classification!! My suggestion for all is to minimize the ego and find the right place for your player to develop in order to be an impact player in high school. The other side of this is that most teams advertise academy instruction, or former MLB instructors. You would laugh if you do some research on some of these guys. I am not saying that you are all being lied to but I am just saying that there are many folks in our area that are simple taking advantage of you parents with all of the marketing!! I may sound bitter but I am really not. Just smiling as people make good livings on mom and dad's ego!! Do not get caught up if your son is more powerful than the otehr players, they will most likely catch up and some will pass his power! Do not get discouraged if you have the runt of the litter, he will very likely catch up and pass a few along the way!! The 13u season is the first development season but also a crazy year with a lot of size/power differences!! Good luck to all!! |

Agreed here also. My third oldest played through college and had chances to play overseas but declined and quit after college. He was the runt of the group growing up and I mean small. In highschool maxed at 5'08" / 180 - 190 with speed, range in the middle infield and plenty of pop in his bat. Got through college free but when I say he was small I mean it in youth ball. He was the "runt" on the field who made everyone take notice by busting his butt all game and getting the job done on offense and defense.
Never overlooked because of his size because he made it a point to get everyone to notice his hustle, determination and work ethic. |

p.s. He has turned into a fine / hardworking young man but when he wanted to quit ball in his senior year and told me "dad, my body is just worn out and I've suffered more injuries this year than all others combined" My response was quick and to the point though: "what's her name." LOL

Interesting observations and experiences but probably unavoidable.
I'm not a coach but i would imagine most coaches are trying to field as competitive team as they can. And often, being competitive means having some size and power.
More than likely, this will continue to be the case.
I'd be nice for a team intentionally recruit kids 5'0" and under. I think they'd have to have great team speed and high batting averages but they'd be fun to watch and competitive.
Saw a few at the e32 like that this year albeit, ultimately, the teams with the big kids that were big boppers prevailed. |

Strong defense and a small ball offense can level the field, but it's tough to compete without some donkeys on the mound and a mule or two behind the dish. |

A top team needs both power and speed. I've already heard this year from several parents and even a few kids "they didn't take me / my son because I / he wasn't big enough".
Are you smaller with great speed, have a very good on base percentage, and a far above average glove, a fairly strong to a strong arm? If so, you should be fine regardless of your size. You've heard the term "speed kills", well add to that a high on base percentage and then multiply it several times over.
My youngest son has a some of these things but everything requires constant work / practice. He knows already at this age that he has to work constantly or he won't be able to compete at higher levels.
No one team that I know of in the mid to north Ga. is only looking for big kids or is building a team full of big kids only. (that I know of).
With that in mind I did see a team in the TBS that was full of horses. As a matter of fact I looked over and thought to myself, "that coach gets into the game, he's as dirty as the kids are". I even mentioned this to a friend and he said calmly "that's not a coach, he's their #4 hitter." They had quite a few big boys on their team, to put it mildly. |
