Throw as often as YOUR arm will let you. Your players arm will outlast yours. We had our Kid take a break for as long as he thought he needed after each season, since he was a t-baller. Which wasn't long after each season was over he loves the game so much and is always wanting to throw. I think that proper mechanics will keep your kids arm ok. It also keeps him stronger. Talk with a GOOD pitching instructor about this. |

We have just completed 2 months no baseball funny part is every evening at home hes either throwing football or throwing balls off basement wall or throwing rocks out of driveway down through woods. As long as arm doesnt hurt i guess he just needs to hammer down! |

Did he pitch?? That is the biggest thing. The stress these kids put into every inning pitch after pitch. Mechanics fail and the body makes its own rules. Playing most positions do not have the constant stress over and over again that pitching does. If the answer is he pitched a lot then the rest was needed. Should be good to go now though. Good luck. |

If he pitched...did he have a program to follow? That is the key to have a routine and build the arm up. I have my pitchers throw a bullpen every Wednesday to build there arms up. You can't expect a kid to throw 80-100 pitches a weekend without building the arm up. This is how they get hurt. You have to get them to that point where they have the endurance. I have seen kids who had a 30-40 pitch limit grow into the kid who can throw 80 pitches a weekend and be healthy. I do on the other hand give them June and July off to rest there arm and also November and December before we start all over again. The bottom line if he is a pitcher he will only get better by following a routine all year round with a few months off. |

He did pitch but for 2 coaches who had combined 21 years experince at pro level and if he threw over 70 pitches was not allowed to pitch for 10 days. Ironically 3 years ago he did hurt his arm playing center field so we keep close eye on it trying to learn as much as possible. Thanks for input it is really helpful especially for a dad who didn't play baseball. |

You will hurt your arm more likely playing another position than pitching in my opinion. Here is why. When pitching, you warm up, get 8 warm ups every inning, and repeat the same thing over and over.
In the field..you warm up...sit down...throw 3 half aS## throws at the beginning of an inning...Then you get a laser hit in the whole and you have to suddenly throw off balance and give it 1000%...BOOM goes the dynamite (Arm in this case)

P although I respect your experience I am going to have to disagree. Most pitchers throw half in warm ups but throw that "in the hole" throw repeatedly. Many unbalanced, which refers more to an "all arm" throw. In the field you may never throw that throw. A whole weekend. So pitchers still have the most potential for severe damage to their arms that they just don't know they are doing. Let's face it, if a kid is throwing strikes and getting people out coaches aren't inclined to change them to have better mechanics. BUT if a parent looks at his kid and says he looks tired I think he needs a break, then the kid should take a break. Period. |

Boys i have to disagreee..Most coaches know when to shut a kid down and many parents dont know or they would be coaching. If a coach is waiting on parents to make decision then I would suggest find a new coach. One thing will ring true Coaches that have had the experience an played at high level know that today does not matter at all so why jeperdize a kids arm. Parents tend to think todays game actually matters. Way too many factors that has little to do with baseball determine if a kid makes it. Growth, interests, home life, injuries, work ethic and so on.... |

I have always heard that most pro pitchers come from Northern states and most hitters come from warm weather states. I wonder if this statement is true? If true, it would explain the theory of resting arms. |

Oh, but what about, "gotta win that shiny plastic trophy" kind of coach? You know the ones. Poor kids catch a full game then are asked to pitch the next one. Parents watch your own kids. In the end, there is no other person on Earth who cares as much as you...........or should care.
I hear that LONG TOSS is a good thing. |

LilBig, your key word..... "Most" coaches. This is where I have to point out that I have seen all types of coaches over pitch kids, IMO. Most are just dads when they start anyway. But even higher level experience does not mean they don't go in it for the winning. It is still mostly about winning. Mainly because most of these kids won't be around for anything but now. Now this is not to say that all parents know what it takes to make a good decision. But what I was trying to say is you, as the parent, better start to know when your child is tired when he is pitching. The coach is not pulling a pitcher if he has innings left and he is toughing innings out. You have to protect your child and not hope your coach has the proper judgement. Even the major teams have arms they lean on when it comes to Sunday. Most coaches even if they have played past high school were not pitchers. But even if they were it doesn't mean they have some sense of what the future can be. Talent can look so different year to year. Most coaches don't think they are over working their pitchers. And if you asked them they would say they never do. But it just keeps happening. So the best advise is do your own research. |
