What process should I go through to get my son into the East Cobb organization? The wife and I are ready to commit to the long drive to and from practice weekly. We have talked to a couple of parents from our area that made the commitment; they said it was well worth the necessary effort. Any information would be appreciated.

The only thing you "Have" to do is register him for the tryouts in August and show up to be evaluated by the teams and chosen for a team. My suggestion would be to get a sense of the EC teams currently playing at 11U and how they are coached. The tryouts are a whirlwind and you can be approached by several coaches wanting your son, if he tries out well. It is best to have an idea of the coaches/teams you are interested in, and the ones that you don't want to play for. (I will always recommend East Cobb as the best place to play but can't say that every team is a great team to play for. Do your homework.)
Ask questions, watch teams play, etc. Treat it like a job interview. It is where your son will spend the next season playing and you don't want him having a bad decision because you did not do the research.
Good luck. I am sure you will get other specific feedback on here as well. |

Easiest way is to go to their clinics they have every year..go to the east cobb website for more details...
EAST COBB BASEBALL TRY-OUT CLINICS for 2011 teams Instructors will include former college players who have played within the East Cobb Baseball organization, college and high school coaches, and East Cobb Baseball coaches. Be a part of nationally known East Cobb Baseball, winners of 146 national championships. Dates: Ages 8-13 August 7th & 8th, 2010 Registration deadline: July. 31st Ages 14-18 August 14th & 15th Registration deadline: Aug. 7th Cost: $100 pre-registration $125 late registration It is very important that you pre-register in order for the player’s name to be placed on the coach’s evaluation sheet.

Thanks for the information. I'll get him registered for the clinic in August. I'll start on my homework! One more question.....If we are approached by a coach at the clinic, do we have to decide at that moment (unless its one of our top picks of course) or can we wait to decide?
Thanks again. |

Many times the discussion goes like this - Coach " We are interested in your kid for our team - you want to be on our team?" Parent - "Maybe, we are kinda just looking out our options right now." Coach - "Ok...don't wait because we are filling our rosters spots today and you may get left out".
Most of the kids will be offer a spot on a team and there will be a little selling and pressure to get you to agree right then. If you kid is good enough - the spot will be open for him.
Do your homework..talk to other parents who have played for the team/coach you are interested in and find out the pros and cons of playing with that team.
Also, many area coaches from other teams besides East Cobb will be "hanging out" at the park that day checking out the talent as well.
Depending on the age of your son, many of the kids that are there on try out day have already agreed to be on team so the kids that haven't agreed already will get several looks...
The try out is as much a fundraiser for East Cobb as it is a "try out". |

Thank you for taking the time to respond. Will we be asked about a primary position, or will he just go through all the positions that he plays? |

While you may be asked what position your son plays, during the try outs it is usually broken down into stations. Infield, Outfield, Pitching, Running will all be done in groups one at a time. Players will have numbers on their hats and the coaches will walk around taking notes of what they observe from certain players during the try outs. |

NoDaddyBall, I would also recommend looking at other travel teams outside of ECB, just to compare. ECB does not mean no daddy ball. Most teams are still coached by dads, some good and some maybe not so good. Really need to look at all teams individually. On the site that tries to rank 11u teams only one east cobb team is in the top 10 in the state. So much is dependent upon coaching. Good Luck! |

The "NoDaddyBall" doesn't means that I think dads shouldn't coach their sons. I just don't like the "daddyball" style of coaching. There are some great baseball teams that are coached by a dad who doesn't have his sons playing time/position in the forefront of his decisions for the team. My son has played on some very good baseball teams that were coached by a dad.
My son has played travel baseball for a few years. I asked about coming to East Cobb to attempt to get him on the best team possible for his advancement in baseball. I know that not every team at East Cobb is a ranked team. I also know that I will have the best chance to find a quality coached team for him to play on at East Cobb. I have no delusions that he will be asked to play on one of the upper echelon teams at the park in his age group. I am looking for the best team for him, not just an "East Cobb" team.
Sorry if the "NoDaddyBall" screen name made you feel that I didn't like dads coaching a baseball team. Believe me, I know that if it were not for dads coaching, there would not be many teams (in any sport) around!

no daddy ball, We have lived here for 2 years and have come to realize there are many good programs outside East Cobb. Cobb County is a great place to get your son in baseball, but would encourage you to do your homework You should look at the Cooperstown results and see how the East Cobb teams did against some of the best competition in America. ECB is very good, but there are just an equal number of talented teams outside ECB.
Good luck |

Can't compare ECB vs. Ctown teams...90% of those teams are rec teams. |
