My oldest son is turning 16. I would like to hear from guys with older kids, even those who have moved on to college or stopped playing. The question is- did their pitching velocity change drastically from 15 to 16-17-18? Different kids will peak at different times, but what would be a good indicator that the kid either does or does not have the genes to reach 90+ and have a future as a pitcher?

Tm15, I don't think you are going to get any concrete answers here. The problem is every kid is different and even if you found two kids the same size and weight their genetics are different. Some kids can throw 50 pitches at high velocity and be toast, others can pitch 150 pitches and act like they were just out for a Sunday stroll.
I really wish there was a magical number like if your 16 year old is throwing X then he will throw Y in one year...a lot of this has to do with training, strengthening, and the individual kids physical development as well as their drive, I know of a 12u kid who hit over 70mph last year, but he has zero interest in pitching long term....do you think he will make it to 90+? I doubt he will unless he starts to love it.
I would suspect if your 16u kid is already over 6 ft and isn't throwing at least 80 he won't reach 90+. It is rare for a kid to throw over 85, and a freak of nature that throws over 95. They are the anomalies, not the norms. |

thanks. That's what I'm looking for. Working backwards from collegiate or higher success, what were kids throwing at 14-15-16 on their way up. |

You could always go stalk the Perfect Game website. If you pull up the most recent 18u tourney, or even last years, pull up the all tournament team article for the event and look at the pitching section....then look up every kids name and find a few that have 4+ years histories...this really comes down to how much do you want this data? |

Conversely, I know another guy who threw 65 at 14 and at 17 only throws 70. Actually, I know a lot more of these guys than guys like ^^^^^^.

14U-78-80 mph 15U-81-83 mph 16U-85-88 mph 17U-90-93 mph 18U-92-95 mph
Those are my kid's progress from 8th grade to this past summer in HS and travel ball in PG events. I think he could have been touching 96-97 but had a 12 week layoff from baseball in thh fall of Sr year HS due to emergency appendectomy. Son is scholarshipped and will play ACC ball this year as a freshman. |

Congrats Critical Mass! Your boy must have worked hard and you must be very proud! Can I ask WHEN did he start receiving the offers? I would guess rising 10th grader. |

1st offer was summer after Soph year from mid level D1 in SC. I will also admit that he went to Ft Myers and threw well but lasted 5 and only had 1 offer from a D1 after that. He landed where he should be after learning a hard lesson on the recruiting game and finally accepted a D1 offer the summer between Jr and Sr year. |

Congrats to you and your son and thanks for sharing.
Anything particular to which you attribute the gains in velocity (other than increased size and strength that come with increased age)? Long toss program? Weights? |

His freshman year he did a long toss program, that got him up to the low 80s. I think it was the Kansas City Royals program at one time. Long toss, weighted balls but using them to increase shoulder strength via tapping them clockwise and counter-clockwise out in front on a fence, then various medicine ball exercises.
He really hit his stride after sophmore summer, going into junior year that fall, he hit the weightroom and worked out twice a week on pitcher specific exercises with a former d1 pithcer. That got him into the 90s. I still say he has room to get more, but in college they need him to "pitch", hit spots and focus less on throwing hard as most can sit on the FB at that level. we'll see how he does. |

My son right before 16 was maybe low 70s.......now 16+8 months and 85mph......change was puberty and starting to hit gym. He's 6'1" but only 150lbs. Point is have to look at kid and factor in size, strength, mechanics and then "scale" from there. If he's 16 and 6'2" 200lbs and reasonable mechanics very little chance much more.....but 5'7" 135lbs pre-puberty and 75mph, not many P lessons, and Dad is 6'+ then room to scale. |
