How many middle schools have jv teams...Our is starting one this year and I'm wondering if it would be a tad much for a 6th grader to parctice 3 hours everyday and then go to travel ball practice for another 2 hours 2 days a week and play a 10 tournament season on top of all of that...Plus the regular games the jv team would play...whew......with out getting burned out... |

I know a lot of boys that have done it with no problems. My oldest son did it last year and had a great time and he will be doing it again this year. I don't know what age your son is, but the middle school team will be playing 54-80 instead of 50-70 at 12U. He did not have that big of a problem with it and he kept his grades up. Actually getting him to finish his homework was never easier.
Every time I think we are overwhelmed with getting our three boys to all their games, practices etc., I think of a friend who has five boys playing travel baseball out four different parks... I do not know how they do it... but I have only seen him at the parks. |

No middle school has a JV team and our 10U team is playing 60 / 90 this year. |

never was a fan of 12U playing 54-80 nor 13+14U playing 60-90, but that seems to be they way it is..seen 11U kids play 100+ games in a traval season..now us parents were burned out..but I've never seen a kid who loves the game of baseball get burned out..sure there is a lot of kids out there who would play everyday of the year if they could. Now I definately think kids need time off, but if your son loves the game..getting burned out shouldn't be an issue.. One last thing...if he pitches or catches make sure BOTH coaches are on the same page..Saw a case were a kid was playing both Middle School ball and travel ball and was a pitcher...conflict will/did arise. |

Please tell me your 10u team playing at 60/90 is a typo? There's no way a 10u kid can make strong enough throws from their positions on this size of field and most definitely they aren't strong enough to pitch from 60 feet. |

CinReds: Suggest a cut off man from pitcher to home (10U 60 ft??).
Are 6th graders asked to play 54/80? This, in itself, would be very difficult to make work. Do the middle school programs typically split their squads? For instance the 11/12 year olds (6th and 7th graders) play 50/70 and 13/14 year olds (7th and 8th graders) play on 54/80. If so, how do they make it work?
Have you seen an 11 year old 6th grader making the middle school team and playing on the 54/80 dimensions? Did it work? |

Yes that all play on the same size field the BIG one....That's my only problem with middle school ball and travel ball for a 11yr old.. And the kids on the team taht may or may not make a good travel team.. |

As a current MS coach and travel coach with a 12u son, I feel very strongly that most 12u kids are NOT ready to play MS baseball. We play on 60/90, swing drop 3, and wear metal spikes and most 14u kids find this a struggle. Not ALL but many. As for 12u or in the case of the CinRed 10u, most of these boys are not strong enough to throw the ball across the diamond on 60/90 much less hit the ball threw the infield with enough steam to overcome the more mature 14u or 8th grade players. My advice is untill they get on the other side of puberty keep them off the 60/90 field. 54/80 maybe for the right kid...but just because they have played tons of travel ball doesn't mean that they will cross over to the bigger field easily. I will on occasion take a 6th grader as a sub only and they have to be a stud with a lot of patience and knowledge of how to play. And if you are letting a 12u or 10u throw from 60 feet... I know two doctors....one for your sons arm...and one for you...they grow up too fast anyway...let nature take it's course. What I normally find with 12u kids wanting to play for their school is that it's more about peer pressure and trying to be BMOC. And that usually comes from pressure from over eager parents...trying to show off their prodigy. |

I do not like middle school ball at any level, I am glad our county doesn't have this. I have some kids on our team that live in other counties that have it. The main problem I have is the comp. level. I was able to meet three kids last year that never played high school ball and all three received college scholarships through their travel teams.. Middle school baseball seems to be a step above rec. ball. JMHO!!! |

Your not too far off titan......but i will say that I feel kids should support their schools in sports....just not 12u or 10u playing 60/90.quote: Originally posted by titansx11

Middle school ball vs 8th Grade feeder team ball can be a different subject. Like I've said before if 8th grade feeder team ball is run correctly it can be good. Go to Tennesee and see some of the 8th grade feeder system..I'd put their best teams on par with the best USSSA Major teams anywhere...Now I don't think they could compete with the elite 14U teams..ie ECAstro's but they certainly could with every team a notch below that. Lets be honest too, 50% of travel teams are nothing but glorified rec teams. They can call themselves what they want too, but I've seen plenty of "travel teams" that go 0-3 in pool play being run ruled all the time. Look at Milton's or Roswell's or Chathoochies, 8th grade feeder team and They were a good team a few years back..haven't seen them recently. The old Wills Park Hammerheads, Wills Park Strom (good teams in the day) dissolve because of Middle school ball. If run properly (and I'm not saying many Feeder Teams are) 8th grade feeder ball has some built in advantages that travel ball doesn't. Middle school ball (6&7 grades) I agree is usually Rec Ball by another name. It's sort of like 9th grade fall ball. Not neccesarly the "best" baseball you'll every seen, but it does give a kid a chance to be noticed by the school, even though the HS coaches are not involved. (well they don't coach, but I'm sure they ask questions) I imagine 10-12 year olds playing 60-90 has to be painful to watch. I think 13U playing 60-90 is painful and 14U playing 60-90 is (and I know a lot of people disagree) is not as good as a game as 54-80. (but that boat has sailed and I doubt they will ever go back from 60-90)..You have to old enough to even have seen 14u Play 54-80 to understand.. |

All of the Floyd County Schools have a J V team made up of 6th and 7th grade kids that didnt make Varsity 7th & 8th graders they play 50/70 . This Middle School league in Rome has 11 MS involved Pepperell, Model, Darlington, Cedartown, Trion, Coosa, Armuchee and Rome just to name a few. They are allowed to use drop 5 bats Varsity plays 54/80. The Season Starts in less than 2 weeks and ends in a tournament format. Done by April 1st |

I think some of us are getting confused on the terminology of "JV" and "Varsity". When I think of a JV team I am talking about mostly of 9th and 10th graders. While varsity players are mostly 11th and 12th graders. However I have seen in some instances where an 8th grade feeder team will play a HS JV summer schedule against 9th and 10th graders. |

MLB is next season. I made the 10U on 60/90 comment tongue-in-cheek to illustrate the overzealous nature of some coaches and parents in the travel ball world and the one-upmanship that commonly takes place as the seasons pass by and to see what feedback it would receive. It would seriously not surprise me to see it within 10 yrs. It was not too long ago that 14U played on 54/80, not regulation like now. |
