Great article .
The best point made is back in different times a young player would blow his arm out and it was over.
Now someone wants to take him or her to the surgeon to be re-invented.
And for what? Glory , keep up with the family at school or down the road whose child plays sports too.
Cant fall behind you know |

I happen to think competitive sports keeps kids focused and out of trouble. Works for my kid. There are limits of course, but it's a competitive world we're raising our kids in. Band camp is competitve, cheerleader camp is competitive, not to mention the classroom, or getting accepted into college...ya gotta make the competiton fun somehow, someway.
Funny how one can read a news article decrying the obesity of today's youth due to lack of exercise: http://www.news.com.au/story/0,23599,24330513-36398,00.html
...and still another about how over-competitive and joyless they are in sports. Not sure if this superstar kid's feeling any pain though with his own clothing line: http://www.nytimes.com/2009/03/22/magazine/22basketball-t.html

Thats a good question Rocky, At first I thought "is this a trick question? " ;-) But after much thought ; I will put it out there, or bare my soul if you will. If it help's some coach or dad out there just starting out, it's worth it.
One thing I felt in the beginning was,I was going to give them every tool they needed to win and be the best!, that as a coach not only did I need to teach the game or the fundamentals, But I needed to teach/instill or show these boys how to have that Fight or Drive or never quit intensity that you need to win. You know like the coaches we all had did? Or at least the ones I had. You know, In your face , Push push push , demand 110 % Etc ...WRONG! ( what was I thinking??)
Another thing I got caught up in ,Son You have GOT to get a hit! We have to win the game! We have to win the league! Play allstars! Win the District! Win the State! Win the World Series ! Nothing wrong with that, thats why you play, but Sometimes I forgot to remember:
They are kids, they just want to play! Yes you play to win but; I think I would ,Not be so focused on the final performance, but appreciate what they had learned, understand that they are kids having fun .
I knew that, but somehow it got overshadowed by MY desire to "Be the best" ! Win !
Teach the fundamentals of the game and let them be who they are gonna be.
My son and I have a great relationship (thank god I did not screw it up ) He is well rounded and excells in school and everything he does, And he still loves to play. But I worry that at times, I stole his enjoyment of the game by pushing too hard.
If I could do it again,I would not push my son so hard to perform , "give it all you have got!", "Be the best"!
And just relax and enjoy it with him.
So there you go Rocky, Thats one guys view on it, and the mistakes that I Struggle with and made early on, and that I "still" struggle with sometimes.
But Im working hard on it and trying to be a better coach and Dad.

The thing I think I would go back and teach differently is the enforce, even more than I did, the deep fundamentals of playing the game. Also teach more of what a quality at-bat is (hitting the ball to the right side to move the runner from 2b to 3b, sac fly to score a runner from 3b, etc). I think a lot of kids are lead to believe that if they don't get a hit, they have failed, and that is not always the case.
I see a lot of coaches of the younger ages, and I was guilty of at times, hitting hard grounders to their infielders when what they needed more of is work getting in the right position to make the play. I did not really need them to catch as many "Hot shots" as I did make the "routine play". I saw a lot of kids get skiddish about fielding balls in the infield for fear it was going to bounce up and hit them in the face. They was certainly not fun for them.
It is a learning process. |
